PENSACOLA, Fla. – Entering Saturday
Bob Stinnett had two games left as University of West Florida men's basketball head coach, and his final home game on Saturday was a memorable one. The retiring coach was recognized before the game for his contributions to the program, and the creation of the Bob and June Stinnett Men's Basketball Scholarship Endowment was announced. The Argonauts fell to West Alabama by a score of 96-58 in the contest.
"Bob has had a tremendous impact on the University of West Florida both as a student-athlete and as a coach," said UWF Athletic Director
Dave Scott. "The scholarship endowment is a testament to the individuals he's impacted in our Pensacola community."
The scholarship endowment was created thanks to the generosity of multiple donors and will honor Bob and June Stinnett. The endowment will provide scholarship funding for the program, assist men's basketball student-athletes with their education, and serve as a legacy to honor Bob and June.
"It's a tremendous honor to have this endowment in our name," said head coach
Bob Stinnett. "Our staff, going all the way to the administration level, are phenomenal people and I am very grateful for this honor."
The Argonauts (7-20, 3-18 GSC) started slow in the game as West Alabama got to an early 23-5 lead over the Argos. West Florida could only pull within 16 points of the Tigers the rest of the game and eventually fell 96-58 in the last home game of the regular season.
On a night honoring their seniors, UWF was led by senior
Demetrius Moore (Paxton, Fla./Indiana State University) who scored 17 points for the Argos.
Playing their last game at the UWF Field House,
Lendward Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla./Ribault HS),
Erin Straughn (Pensacola, Fla./East Carolina University),
Kent Langham (Robertsdale, Ala./Pensacola State College),
Sean Voss (Belton, Texas/Belton HS) and
Tyler Funk (Clarence, N.Y./Hillsborough CC) all combined for 27 points and 12 rebounds.
"They're all great guys that work hard," continued Stinnett. "They're great guys, they do the right things and they're going to graduate. We didn't do well tonight, but they are going to do well in life."
West Florida will wrap up the 2014-15 season next weekend when they travel to Valdosta State Saturday, Feb. 28.
