UWF softball sweeps doubleheader at West Georgia

West Florida totals 19 runs in two games

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Florida softball team earned two wins against Gulf South Conference opponent the University of West Georiga Saturday afternoon. The Argonauts (8-20, 5-12 GSC) totaled 19 runs in two games including a season best 14 runs in game two.

"We hit the ball well today and our power is starting to come alive," said head coach Melissa Paul. "We executed plays in the field and were able to come out with two big wins against a conference opponent."

In two games, freshman Kaylen Rowell (Pensacola, Fla.) went 4-for-8 and drove in a career-high five RBI off of two doubles and one home run.

Game 1: West Florida 5, West Georgia 1

West Florida's pitching stood out in game one as Becca Taylor (Panama City, Fla./Rutherford HS) as she pitched five scoreless innings for the Argos and only gave up one run in the sixth. Taylor went six innings in the game and only gave up one run off of two hits while sophomore Rebecca Hein (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS) picked up the save in the seventh.

"Becca came out strong in game one again after only giving up two hits," continued Paul. "She's doing a great job working fast and working ahead."

Rowell hit her first home run of her career and picked up two RBI to lead things for UWF. Five different Argos scored a run for West Florida in the game, including Lauren Register (Vernon, Fla./Vernon HS) who went 3-for-4 in the game.

Game 2: West Florida 14, West Georgia 3

West Florida found the run support they've been missing all season and had their highest offensive production of the season in game two. The Argos totaled 14 runs off of 15 hits, both a season best for UWF, with eight Argos in the lineup totaling at least one RBI.

Rowell and sophomore Jessica Wilkinson (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) each lead UWF with three RBI in the game while Wilkinson led things at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a double and a home run.

UWF out hit the Wolves 15-5 and junior pitcher Kalyn Chapman (Boonville, Ind./Wabash Valley JC) went all seven innings for the Argos and struck out seven batters.

West Florida and West Georgia will complete the three game series tomorrow with a single game slated to start at 1 p.m. ET.
