PENSACOLA, Fla. – University of West Florida softball sophomores
Becca Taylor (Panama City, Fla./Rutherford HS) and
Rebecca Hein (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS) combined to pitch a perfect game against Miles College on Wednesday afternoon.
"Becca and Rebecca were wonderful for us today," said head coach
Melissa Paul. "I am very proud of them. They went right after hitters and it proved successful."
The Argonauts (10-20, 5-12 GSC) swept both games of its doubleheader by scores 8-0 in game one and 8-0 in game two with both games lasting five innings. West Florida used quality pitching and defense to spark things for UWF and held the Lady Golden Bears to just one hit in two games.
Game 1: Miles 0, West Florida 8 (5 INNINGS) West Florida's pitchers were dominant in game one of the doubleheader and sophomores Taylor and Rein combined to pitch a perfect game for the Argos. Taylor started the game for UWF and went three innings and struck out three batters without allowing a hit or a walk in the outing.
"It feels pretty good to combine for a perfect game with Rebecca," said Taylor. "We've been working hard all season and today it paid off."
UWF then made a pitching change in the fourth inning and Hein entered the circle looking to preserve the perfect game. The Vestavia Hills, Alabama native faced only six batters in two innings and struck out three to complete the perfect game for West Florida.
"Becca did a great job to get things going for us early on," said Hein. "I just wanted to go out there and continue what she started."
Both pitchers got great run support from their fellow teammates after UWF scored five runs in the first inning. The Argos would pick up a run in the third inning and two runs in the fourth to pick up their eighth run of the game, completing the run rule.
Seven Argos picked up hits in the game, including freshman
Meghan Toney (Huntsville, Ala./Madison County HS) who went 3-for-3 in the game with two RBI. Senior
Aubrey Sumlin (Gulf Shores, Ala./Gulf Shores HS) drove in a career high four runs for West Florida after she went 1-for-3 at the plate.
Game 2: Miles 0, West Florida 8 (5 INNINGS) West Florida came out dominate within the circle for the second straight game, this time it was junior
Kalyn Chapman (Boonville, Ind./Wabash Valley JC) who started for the Argos. Chapman only allowed one hit against the Lady Golden Bears and threw four scoreless innings before
Sarah Maloney (Tamarac, Fla./Cypress Bay HS) came on in relief. Maloney finished the game by striking out 2-out-of-3 batters in the final inning of play.
The Argos took a bit longer to find the scoring in game two of the doubleheader and after scoring only one run in the first inning, they were held scoreless for the second and third innings. However, UWF would break things open in the fourth and fifth innings by scoring three and four runs, respectively.
Five Argos recorded hits in the game, including three different players who tallied multiple hits. One of those players was junior
Emily Pettigrew (Navarre, Fla./Pensacola State College) who had a career game by going 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Senior
Lou Barnard (Apopka, Fla./Lake-Sumter State College) also was perfect at the plate by going 2-for-2 and drove in two runs for UWF.
West Florida will be hosting a Strike Out Cancer Day this weekend during its home series with Lee University. The fundraiser will take place on March 28 at both the UWF Softball Complex and Jim Spooner Field and all proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.
