PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team lost the final game of its Gulf South Conference series with Lee University Sunday afternoon. The Argonauts (10-23, 5-15 GSC) lost 2-1 after leading for most of the game behind pitcher
Becca Taylor (Panama City, Fla./Rutherford HS) who pitched six scoreless innings.
West Florida broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning when
Lauren Register (Vernon, Fla./Vernon HS) hit an RBI single. Lee had two runners on with one out in the top of the fifth but a strikeout by Taylor and ground ball got the Argos out of the jam.
But a two run homerun by the Lady Flames in the top of the sixth would give Lee a 2-1 lead with one inning to play. However, West Florida couldn't get the bats rolling when they need them most and fell to the Lady Flames 2-1 in the final game of the series.
Taylor was dominant for most of the game and pitched six scoreless innings including three perfect innings to start the game. But it was one pitch that determined a win or loss for the Argos after the home run in the sixth.
UWF totaled three hits in the game and were led by Register who finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Seniors
Jenna Belser (Chipley, Fla./Holmes County HS) and
Bianca Lopez (Stuttgart, Germany/Patch American HS) were the other Argos to record hits.
