ROME, Ga. – The West Florida baseball team swept a doubleheader at Shorter, outscoring the Hawks 10-0 behind a pair of stellar starting pitching performances.
UWF junior
Brandon Nagem (Pensacola, Fla./Northwest Florida State) pitched a complete game, nine-inning shutout to lead UWF to a 5-0 victory in game one, and
Jarrod Petree (Apopka, Fla./Central Florida) pitched a complete game, seven-inning shutout to lead UWF to a 5-0 victory in game two.
"The tale of the tape today was two outstanding pitching performances by Nagem and Petree," UWF coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. "In the first game, we had our hands full with their pitcher, and we had to overcome quite a few strikeouts. But, we were able to put some hits together and move some runners over to score some late runs to open the game up.
"In the second game, we got it going a little earlier. We got them behind the eight ball, and Petree kept throwing a lot of strikes."
Game 1: West Florida 5, Shorter 0 Nagem pitched a complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts, allowing just five hits.
The Argos took the lead with a three-run sixth and never relinquished it, adding runs in the eighth and ninth.
Alex Greene (Orlando, Fla./Hagerty HS) led UWF, going 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs, and
Nick Kerkmann (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.
Game 2: West Florida 5, Shorter 0 Petree pitched a complete game, seven-inning shutout with seven strikeouts, allowing two hits.
UWF scored four in the third and one in the fourth in the win.
Ledarious Clark (Meridian, Miss./East Mississippi CC) went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two runs, and Greene went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
"It was a good doubleheader sweep on the road," Jeffcoat said. "We needed it in conference play, and we need to come out and finish it tomorrow."
UWF goes for the sweep the sweep Sunday, April 12, at Shorter at 1 p.m. ET.
