Argos sweep Hawks with 6-0 victory

UWF pitchers hold Shorter scoreless in three-game series

ROME, Ga. – Four West Florida pitchers combined to shut out Shorter as the West Florida baseball team swept its three-game series against the Hawks with a 6-0 victory Sunday afternoon. The Argonauts (25-14, 18-9) outscored the Hawks (14-18, 9-15) 16-0 over the weekend.

"It was another outstanding pitching performance today," UWF coach Mike Jeffcoat said. "We got several of our guys in there today. Walker O'Connor gave us a great five innings. Then, the relievers finished it.

"We had some outstanding defensive plays by Alex Greene and Jimmy Redovian. All of the infielders made some great plays. It was pitching and defense all weekend, and we had some timely hitting."

O'Connor (Bedford, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) improved to 6-3 overall after pitching five innings and allowing four hits. Three relievers combined to pitch four shutout innings while allowing just one hit.

UWF scored runs in the first and second to lead 2-0, before adding to their lead with a two-run fourth highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles by Redovian and Michael Tomlinson (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park HS). The Argos added runs in the seventh and the ninth.

"It was a well-earned sweep on the road," Jeffcoat said. "I'm real proud of the guys"

UWF moved up to third in the GSC standings after extending its GSC winning streak to six. UWF travels to No. 16 West Alabama, which sits atop the conference standings, April 18-19.
