UWF drops first game of series at No. 12 UWA 8-5

Argos drop to fourth in GSC standings with five conference games remaining

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Florida baseball team lost the first game of its Gulf South Conference road series 8-5 Sunday night at No. 12 West Alabama.

The Tigers (30-8, 22-5) took the lead in the fourth, and the Argonauts (25-15, 18-10) were never able to come back despite scoring runs in three consecutive innings from the fifth through seventh.

"We made too many mistakes against a good West Alabama team," UWF coach Mike Jeffcoat said, "I thought we fought and scrapped. But, the big momentum change was when we had the bases loaded with no out in the fourth and didn't score. They were able to tack runs and open it up."

Brandon Nagem (Pensacola, Fla./Pine Forest HS) was credited with the loss after allowing six runs, three earned, in 5.1 innings while striking out seven.

Ledarious Clark (Meridian, Miss./East Mississippi CC) led UWF with two triples and two runs while going 2-for-5. Nic Strasser (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips HS) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run, and Alex Greene (Orlando, Fla./Hagerty HS) went 2-for-4 with a run.

"We've got to come back tomorrow and clean up those mistakes to have a chance to win," Jeffcoat said.

UWF will complete the series with a doubleheader at UWA Monday, April 20, at 1 p.m.
