Argos split doubleheader, snap No. 10 UWA's win streak

O’Connor throws complete game shutout to lead UWF in game two victory

LIVINGSTON Ala. – The West Florida baseball team split a doubleheader at No. 10 West Alabama, losing game one 3-2 on a walk-off before winning game two 4-0 behind Walker O'Connor's strong pitching performance.

The Argonauts (26-16, 19-11) snapped the Tigers' (31-9, 23-6) 20-game winning streak with the win in game two.

"The first game we've got to give their pitchers credit," UWF coach Mike Jeffcoat said. "They kept us in check. We had a tight ballgame and unfortunately lost on a walk-off in the ninth. Reed Bright did a great job in relief but just couldn't hold on.

"I was real proud of the guys in the second game. The story of the second game was O'Connor. He threw a great game for us. The team really needed it, and we had a couple of big hits from Jimmy Redovian and Jordan Stark. It was a big win for us salvage the series."

Game One: West Florida 3, West Alabama 2

UWF came back to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the eighth in a pitcher's duel. Michael Tomlinson (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park HS) drove in his second run of the day with a two-out RBI double.

Jarrod Petree (Apopka, Fla./Central Florida) received no decision after allowing two runs in five innings while striking out four.

Reed Bright (Pelham, Ala./Snead State CC) pitched three hitless innings of relief before allowing the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

Game Two: West Florida 4, West Alabama 0

O'Connor (Bedford, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) pitched seven shutout innings with three strikeouts to lead the Argos in the win.

UWF scored two in the fourth after a pair of UWA errors and then added two insurance runs in the seventh on a pair of RBI singles.

UWF will host Spring Hill in a doubleheader Tuesday, April 21, at Jim Spooner Field. Both games of the doubleheader are scheduled for seven innings.
