UWF Baseball sweeps doubleheader against Spring Hill

Kerkmann goes 3-for-7 with three RBIs and two runs in two games

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida baseball team extended its winning streak to three with a doubleheader sweep against Spring Hill Tuesday night at Jim Spooner Field. The Argonauts won game one 2-1 and game two 4-0.

"It was tough to come out and play two today, but it's baseball," UWF coach Mike Jeffcoat said. "You get to play five games in three days. We were a little lackluster on the offensive side in the first game. We got good pitching out of Alex Stevens and Ronnie May closing both games. Combine those performances with Kevin Peters and Josh McLaney in the second game.

"We finally had a three-run inning in the fifth and swung the bats good enough to win. But, obviously we've got to rest up and get ready for the season finale this weekend with Delta State."

Game One: West Florida 2, Spring Hill 1

Stevens (Pensacola, Fla./Lurleen B. Wallace) pitched six innings, striking out two and allowing one run before May (Apopka, Fla./Apopka HS) pitched a hitless seventh to record his fifth save of the season.

The Argos took the lead in the first on a Nick Kerkmann (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) RBI single. The Badgers tied the game in the top of the fourth, but UWF took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning on a single and a pair of sacrifice bunts.

Game Two: West Florida 4, Spring Hill 0

UWF took the lead in the bottom of the third on a walk, a sacrifice, a hit and a ground out.

The Argos tacked on three more in the fifth after a two-out walk and three two-out hits. Kerkmann drove in the first run on an RBI double, and Alex Greene (Orlando, Fla./Hagerty HS) followed him with an RBI single. Kyle Hamner (Maitland, Fla./Edgewater HS) then scored Greene from first on a double in the left-center field gap.

McLaney (Laurel Hill, Fla./Paxton HS) earned the win after pitching three innings of relief and striking out six, and May recorded his second save of the day to close it out.

UWF hosts Delta State in the final three games of the regular season April 25-26 at Jim Spooner Field.
