PENSACOLA, FLA. – The University of West Florida softball team defeated Delta State University in the first game of its doubleheader before having the second game suspended due to inclement weather. The Argonauts (18-28, 10-20 GSC) defeated the Lady Statesmen 2-1 in game one after a walk-off hit and will resume game two in the fourth inning Sunday at noon CT.
Game 1: Delta State 1, West Florida 2 Both pitchers for each team shined in the circle in game one, but it was West Florida's
Becca Taylor (Panama City, Fla./Rutherford HS) who outdueled Delta State's Shayna Beaver to earn the win.
West Florida scored first in the game in the fourth inning when senior
Lou Barnard (Apopka, Fla./Lake Sumter State College) hit a triple in the inning and scored from third after
Kayla Rosario (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola State College) drove her in. The Lady Statesmen responded in the next inning by scoring one run and tied the game at one.
Both pitchers would pitch a scoreless sixth inning, and Taylor shutout the Lady Statesmen in the top half of the seventh to give the Argos a chance to win it in the bottom half of the inning. Junior
Emily Pettigrew (Navarre, Fla./Pensacola State College) led things off with single and made her way to third after a passed ball and sacrifice bunt by senior
Bianca Lopez (Stuttgart, Germany/Patch American HS). West Florida won the game after senior
Jenna Belser (Chipley, Fla./Holmes County HS) hit a walk-off hit in the next at-bat to score Pettigrew from third.
Taylor earned the complete game win after holding the Lady Statesmen to just one run and four hits. The sophomore totaled two strikeouts in the game and improved her record to 10-8 with the win.
The second game of the doubleheader will be resumed Sunday at noon CT because of inclement weather. The Argos and the Lady Statesmen played three complete innings before severe weather hit and DSU was leading 1-0 after scoring a run in the first inning.
Fans who bring their game ticket from Saturday's doubleheader will be admitted to Sunday's games free of charge.
