PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team swept non-conference opponent Albany State University in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. The Argonauts (15-25, 7-16) were led by senior
Jenna Belser (Chipley, Fla./Holmes County HS) who went 3-for-4 in two games with two doubles and three RBI.
Game 1: Albany State 1, West Florida 9 (6 Innings) The Argos jumped to an early lead after the first inning when Belser drove in
Chelsy Krantz (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Iowa Central CC) from third to take the 1-0 lead. Albany State scored one run in the third inning but West Florida responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and took a 3-1 lead.
UWF extended their lead to five over the Lady Golden Rams when
Sarah Adams (Hazel Green, Ala./Hazel Green HS), Kayln Chapman (Boonville, Ind./Wabash Valley JC), and
Jordan Camp (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley HS) all came in to score for the Argos. West Florida added two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to earn the run rule victory over the non-conference opponent, 9-1.
Becca Taylor (Panama City, Fla./Rutherford HS), Chapman, and
Lauren Register (Vernon, Fla./Vernon HS) all combined to pitch a one-hitter for UWF. Taylor was awarded the win after going three innings and struck out four, while Chapman went two innings and struck out five. Register added an inning and a strikeout to end the game.
Junior
Emily Pettigrew (Navarre, Fla./Pensacola State College) led things for UWF at the plate by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and came in to score two runs, while Belser went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
Game 2: Albany State 3, West Florida 11 (5 Innings) West Florida jumped to an early 4-0 lead over the Lady Golden Rams after a 4-run first inning. Belser started the scoring by hitting a bases loaded double to score two runs for UWF. The Argos responded with another big inning in the second by scoring five runs off of two hits.
Albany State broke up the shutout in the third inning after scoring one run and then added two more runs in the fourth to close the gap to 9-3. The Argos would score runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 11-3 and complete the doubleheader sweep.
Belser led UWF at the plate by going 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI, while
Bianca Lopez (Stuttgart, Germany/Patch American HS) went 3-for-3 and scored three runs for the Argos.
Freshman
Sarah Maloney (Tamarac, Fla./Cypress Bay HS) earned the win after going two innings and only allowed one hit.
