No. 3 UWF men's tennis defeats No. 17 Ouachita Baptist 5-0 in NCAA first round

West Florida defeats Ouachita Baptist 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA DII National Championships

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The No. 3-ranked University of West Florida men's tennis team defeated No. 17 Ouachita Baptist 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA DII National Championships on Wednesday morning. West Florida (27-3, 9-0 GSC) will next face No. 4 Armstrong State in the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII National Championships on May 14 at 9 a.m. MST. UWF defeated ASU in a close match by a score of 5-4 in Valdosta, Georgia earlier this season on February 21.
 
"When you're starting off the tournament everyone is a little nervous," head coach Derrick Racine said. "The balls are flying around and you just have to fight for it. And that's what the guys did. All of the guys fought hard and we played a good team. They served well and returned well so it was a good win today."
 
West Florida's No. 4-ranked doubles team of junior Warren Kuhn (Johannesburg, South Africa) and senior Elio Latella (Sydney, Australia) defeated Ouachita Baptists' No. 22-ranked doubles team of Marko Boskovic and Vitor Oliveira 8-6 at number one doubles. Kuhn and Latella improve to 5-2 against nationally ranked opponents on the year.
 
"We got down a break at (one doubles) and our guys fought back," Racine said. "They had great attitudes the whole time and came out with a big win."
 
UWFs No. 17-ranked doubles team of junior Kenny Brasil (Apucarana, Brazil) and sophomore Alex Peyrot (Castelnaudary, France) defeated Maciej Braciszewicz and Jason Mechali 8-5 at number two doubles.
 
Junior Pablo Borrero (Pereira, Colombia) and sophomore Pablo Tellez (Bogota, Columbia/Colegio) defeated Andre Stefano and Lennart Lonnemann 8-5 at number three doubles.
 
No. 34 Brasil defeated Lonnemann 6-1, 6-1 at number three singles while redshirt freshman Sebastian Sanchez (Bogota, Colombia) clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win at number six singles en route to his 12th straight singles victory.
 
UWF won the programs third NCAA DII National Championship in 2014 at will be looking to repeat for the second time in program history this week in Surprise, Arizona. The West Florida men's tennis program won back-to-back national championships in 2004 and 2005.
 
West Florida will next face No. 4 Armstrong State in the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII National Championships on May 14 at 9 a.m. MT.
