Ward named GSC Player of the Week
University of West Florida women's soccer player
Kaley Ward was named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Week by the GSC. Ward is the team's first POTW award-winner since
Sara Helgadottir won the award in September 2014. Ward totaled four goals over the weekend for UWF, including three on Friday against No. 1 Rollins. It was the first hat trick for UWF since Helgadottir accomplished the feat in 2013.
Ward currently ranks ninth in all of Division II and second in the GSC with five goals, and she ranks 14th in the country averaging 1.25 goals per game.
Recapping last weekend
UWF upset No. 1 Rollins 5-1 in Winter Park, Florida, last Friday.
Kaley Ward led the Argonaut offense with three goals, including one penalty kick and the game-winner, in her fourth contest with the team.
Amber Pennybaker picked up her second goal of the year in the 79th minute, and
Audrey Johnson scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 85th minute.
Freshman keeper
Ana Chumik allowed just one goal to Rollins, which ranked second in Division II last year in points per game and third in goals per game.
The Argos unfortunately fell to Tampa 2-1 on Sunday afternoon, and picked up their first loss of the year. Ward was the lone goal-scorer in the match, netting her fifth of the season. In the loss, UWF outshot Tampa 14-13 and matched the Spartans' six shots on goal.
Offense starting strong
Through four matches, the UWF offense is averaging 2.75 goals per game, which is good for 32nd in all of Division II. Should the Argos keep up this offensive output, it would be the highest scoring average per game for the program since its 2012 National Championship campaign, when the team averaged 3.1 goals per game.
Scouting Spring Hill and Montevallo
Spring Hill is 0-2-2 in its first four matches under new head coach Lisa Mann. Mann inherited a team that went 4-9-2 in 2014 with 3-3-2 record at home. The Badgers' top scorers this year are Caroline Holmes and Madison Camet, who have each scored a goal and have two points on the season.
Montevallo brings a 1-2-2 record into the weekend and will play UNC Pembroke on Friday before visiting UWF Tuesday evening. The Falcons' top player through five contests is Abbey West, who scored the game-winner against Christian Brothers last weekend.
The UWF women's soccer team has historically been very successful against the Badgers and the Falcons, posting a combined record of 39-1-1 all-time against the two teams.
