JACKSON, Tenn. – Graduate student
Lendward Griffin had a game-high 20 points along with nine rebounds for the West Florida men's basketball team, but the Argos fell to Union, 77-65, at Fred DeLay Gymnasium on Saturday.
UWF (2-8, 1-6 Gulf South Conference) was unable to overcome Union's 11 3-pointers that seemed to come the most inopportune times for the Argos.
In addition to Griffin's season-high scoring game,
Mario Stramaglia had 13 points with three 3-pointers and
Jason Laatsch also made three triples to finish with 11 points.
UWF shot 39 percent from the floor and was 8 for 22 from outside. The Argos only got to the free throw line six times – making five – compared to Union who was 22 of 28 at the line.
The game was very sloppy for the majority of the first half, with UWF holding a 13-12 lead at the midway point. Union rattled off five-straight points for a 17-13 edge. The Argos got a pair of Griffin layups and eventually tied it at 23 on a Stramaglia jumper with
4:18 to play.
Following a Laatsch 3-pointer that knotted the game at 30, Union made back-to-back 3-pointers to go into the locker room with a 36-30 lead.
UWF was unable to overtake Union in the second half, closing to within one, 43-42 with
14:15 to play. But the Bulldogs scored the next eight to stretch the lead to a manageable 51-42. UWF got within five twice down the stretch, only to see Union convert a 3-point plays and make 9 of 10 free throws to secure the victory.
Union (10-3, 4-3) snapped a 3-game losing streak and was led in the scoring column by KC Goodwin's 19 points.
UWF will return to play
on Monday night at Christian Brothers (6-6, 4-2). Tip-off at Canale Arena is set for
7:00 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's game.
