HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The West Florida men's basketball team went scoreless for just over five minutes in the second half, allowing Alabama Huntsville enough time to come from behind and pull away for a 73-61 win at the Spragins Hall before a national television audience Saturday.
The game followed a similar pattern as Thursday's loss at North Alabama, with UWF opening up a first-half lead on the strength of a strong 20 minutes of play, only to see the opponent overtake the Argos down the stretch.
UWF led 31-27 at the half and was dominant on the glass, holding a plus-seven rebound margin that included 10 second-chance points on six offensive boards. The 27 points for UAH was its lowest output in the opening 20 minutes all season.
But the Gulf South Conference co-leaders remained atop the standings with a strong kick in the second half. With UWF holding a 42-38 lead four minutes into the period, UAH scored 16 unanswered over the next 5:35 to grab a 54-42 lead at the midway point of the half. UWF struggled offensively, missing eight-consecutive field goals during the stretch.
UWF trimmed the margin to six on triples from
Mario Stramaglia and
Justin Williams with 8:05 left but were unable to get any closer.
UWF (3-12, 2-10) shot 37 percent and was just 6 of 24 from outside, making three in each half. The Argos ended the game with a 41-32 rebounding edge.
Junior
Austin Somerfield recorded his sixth double-double of the year as he finished with 14 points, 14 rebounds and four assists. Freshman
Rashaan Benson was the only other Argonaut in double figures, posting 11 points, three assists, two rebounds and two steals.
UAH (12-5, 9-3) was led by Michael Gilmore's 19 points off the bench, along with 12 from Seab Webster and 10 points and seven rebounds from Brandon Roberts.
The Chargers finished the night shooting 45 percent, including 52 percent after halftime.
The game took a while time to get a solid flow, with UWF controlling the tempo and holding an 11-9 lead with 13:09 to play. The Argos locked down defensively and held UAH without a field goal for next 9:41 as the visitors built a 24-11 lead.
The teams traded buckets for the most part the remainder of the half before
Rashaan Benson beat the buzzer with a 19-foot jumper from the top the key to give the Argos a 31-27 lead.
UWF will return to action for a pair of home games this week, beginning Thursday against Lee. Tipoff at the UWF Field House is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
