PENSACOLA, Fla. – After a shutout win over Nova Southeastern on Friday afternoon, West Florida will look to continue its hot streak against region host Saint Leo in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. The game is scheduled for a 1 pm ET start at University Soccer Field on the campus of Saint Leo.
The Argonauts are 6-2-1 all-time against the Sunshine State Conference champion Lions, who will enter the game at 13-3-1. Live stats and a live video broadcast will be available for the game, and links for those can be found at GoArgos.com.
In the NCAA Tournament
- West Florida has reached the NCAA Tournament a total of 14 times, and 13 times in
Joe Bartlinski's 16 years at the helm.
- UWF leads all Gulf South Conference teams in tournament appearances (14) and wins (20). West Florida has 10 NCAA Tournament wins over the last five years.
- The Argonauts matched up with Nova Southeastern on Friday, picking up a 1-0 win over the Sharks in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament for a second consecutive year.
- UWF has a 4-1-1 record at University Soccer Field in Dade City, and Friday marked the first time that the Argonauts have played a team other than Saint Leo at the Lions' home field.
- Entering this year's NCAA Tournament, teams from the Gulf South Conference had played seven total games in the NCAA Tournament over the last two years and all seven of those were decided by 1-0 scores.
What Happened Friday
- West Florida outshot NSU 8-2 and had five corner kicks before senior midfielder
Sara Helgadottir found the net with 10 minutes left in the first half. That would turn out to be the long goal of the game.
- West Florida kept up the pressure for the remainder of the game, totaling 18 shots, nine of which were on target, and NSU keeper Ida Norstrom made seven saves on the day against a strong UWF offense.
- UWF was in top form defensively, as well, allowing Nova Southeastern to get off just five shots all day. In what is becoming a common theme, the Argonauts held NSU's top attacker, 2016 Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year Hannah Christophe, without a shot in her 59 minutes on the pitch.
Wow, This Defense
- West Florida ranks fourth in the country in shutout percentage, recording clean sheets in 16 of the team's 21 games (76 percent). Only No. 3 Central Missouri, No. 2 Grand Valley State have more shutouts.
- Against the top 15 goal-scorers in the Gulf South Conference in the regular season, UWF allowed just six shots, one shot on goal and no goals. Notably, UWF held GSC Co-Player of the Year Summer Lanter without a shot, and did the same against TeMia Pride, who ranked second in the league with 13 goals. Pride was also held shotless on Friday in the semifinal match, and UWF continued the trend by keeping Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year Hannah Christophe, who ranks second in the SSC with 10 goals, without a shot on Friday against Nova Southeastern.
- The Argos' .52 goals against average is tops in the conference, and West Florida has put up five more shutouts than Lee, which ranks second in the league with a .55 GAA and 11 shutouts.
- UWF allowed just one goal in conference play, which has been done five times in GSC history.
- UWF's scoreless minutes streak reached 723 before coming to an end against Mississippi College. The streak was the sixth-longest in conference history.
- West Florida holds seven of the 11 longest shutout streaks in the history of the conference.
- Current UWF goalkeeper
Katelyn Burkhart ranks fifth in DII in GAA at .30, which would rank third in GSC history. Her career GAA of 0.46 would rank second in GSC history.

About Saint Leo
- 2-seed Saint Leo enters the weekend ranked 7th in the country. The Sunshine State Conference champions will statistically be one of the strongest offenses UWF has faced this year, averaging 2.6 goals per game.
- The Lions offense is led by SSC Player of the Year Arielle Kabangu, who leads the conference with 16 goals. SLU will also get offensive help from Natalie Melillo (5 goals, 9 assists) and Katie Waddell (5 goals, 8 assists). This will mark the second consecutive year that West Florida has faced the SSC Player of the Year in the NCAA Tournament, after defeating Nova Southeastern and Sierra Lelii in the First Round last year.
- Saint Leo also boasts the conference Defensive Player of the Year in Selena Jaimes, who led the back line of a team that allowed a 0.75 GAA on the year.
Emily Vogler Has Been Scoring Goals
- UWF
Emily Vogler has tallied 10 goals on the year, which is remarkable considering the fact that she is a defender. The senior from Lynn Haven, Florida, has scored five goals in her last five games, and four of those have come against West Alabama in the regular season and in Friday's semifinal round of the GSC Tournament.
- Her career high coming into the season was two goals, which she scored in each of her first three years at UWF. She ranks seventh in the GSC in total goals.
Let's Get Presidential
- UWF president Judy Bense is retiring at the end of 2016, meaning the university will choose a new president for the first time since 2008.
- In 2008, UWF 24-1-1, won a Gulf South Conference Championship, and finished as national runners-up and set an NCAA DII record with 20 shutouts in a season.
- In the two years after Bense was elected, 2009 and 2010, UWF led DII in scoring offense (5.04 goals per game and 4.24 goals per game).
- The last three US presidential elections have correlated with some interesting results for West Florida women's soccer. The 2004 season was canceled after Hurricane Ivan hit Pensacola, the 2008 team set a national record for shutouts in a season and made the national final, and the 2012 team won the national championship.
Ward on a Roll
- Senior forward
Kaley Ward has been a major offensive catalyst for UWF this year, leading the team with 14 goals and ranking second on the team with 31 points.
- Ward has scored at least a point in seven of her last nine games, with seven goals and two assists in that time.
- She leads the GSC in goals (14) and ranks second in total points (31), converting a stunning 30 percent of her total shots into goals.
