In the GSC Tournament
- West Florida is trying for its 10th Gulf South Conference Championship Title on Sunday. The team already leads the conference with 9 titles, 17 appearances in the championship match, 28 tournament wins and a .750 winning percentage in tournament play.
- UWF's 21 GSC Tournament berths are seven more than Christian Brothers' 14, which are the second-most in conference history.
- Ten Argonauts have been named the GSC Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, and the feat was last accomplished by April Syme in 2014.
- This is Mississippi College's first year eligible for the GSC Tournament. In 2015, the Choctaws were runners-up for the National Christian College Athletic Association Championships
In the Regional Rankings
- Despite having top 15 national marks in scoring offense, assists, goals, points, shutout percentage, allowing just one goal in the month of October, allowing just one goal in conference play all year and claiming the Gulf South Conference regular-season title, UWF was ranked sixth in the latest NCAA South Region rankings on Wednesday.
- The winners of the GSC and the Sunshine State Conference tournaments earn automatic bids into the NCAA Tournament, leaving four at-large bids available for the remaining teams.
Wow, This Defense
- West Florida ranks sixth in the country in shutout percentage, recording clean sheets in 14 of the team's 19 games (74 percent).
- Against the top 15 goal-scorers in the Gulf South Conference in the regular season, UWF allowed just six shots, one shot on goal and no goals. Notably, UWF held GSC Co-Player of the Year Summer Lanter without a shot, and did the same against TeMia Pride, who ranked second in the league with 13 goals. Pride was also held shotless on Friday in the semifinal match.
- The Argos' .58 goals against average is second-best in the conference, but may be a bit misleading. Lee, which leads the Gulf South Conference with a .44 GAA, has a still-impressive 11 shutouts on the year, but West Florida has played three more games of shutout soccer.
- UWF allowed just one goal in conference play, which has been done just five times in GSC history.
- UWF's scoreless minutes streak reached 723 before coming to an end against Mississippi College. The streak was the sixth-longest in conference history.
- West Florida holds seven of the 11 longest shutout streaks in the history of the conference.
- Current UWF goalkeeper Katelyn Burkhart ranks ninth in DII in GAA at .34, which would rank third in GSC history. Her career GAA of 0.49 would rank second in GSC history.
We Are Good
- West Florida leads the GSC in points per game (8.32), scoring offense (2.9 goals per game), total goals (55) and total points (158). UWF ranks 15th or better nationally in each of those categories.
- Freshman Marjorie Boilesen has made an immediate impact in the league, holding the conference lead in assists per game, points per game, total assists and total points.
- Argonauts make up several top-15 spots in individual statistical rankings in Division II. Boilesen stands second in DII in total assists (14) and assists per game, and 15th in points per game (2.00), Sara Helgadottir is also second in the country in assists (14) and fourth in assists per game (0.67), and Katelyn Burkhart ranks eighth in goals against average (.344).
- With their 5-0 against West Alabama on Friday, the Argos marked their 14th shutout of the season, a number that ranks 3rd in GSC history, and their 9th win by four or more goals.
Scouting MC
- Mississippi College boasts a strong defense, allowing just 1.00 goal per game, which ranks third in the GSC. The Choctaw offense is a little closer to the middle of the pack, averaging 1.9 goals per game.
- The MC offense can strike from nearly anywhere. Only Lauren Smith ranks in the top 15 in the conference in goals scored, but both Lauren Kate Carter and Kyra Montes rank among the league's top 10 assisters. Neither Carter nor Montes played in the semifinal game against Lee on Friday.
- Mississippi College defeated UWF on October 27 in Clinton, Mississippi, marking the only loss for the Argonauts in conference play all year. The 1-0 win for MC represented the only goal that UWF allowed during the entire regular season conference schedule and during the entire month of October.
Today in History
- November 6 will mark the 147th anniversary of the first-ever American football -- or, by many accounts, college soccer -- game of all time. The matchup was between Princeton and Rutgers, with rules that more closely resembled modern-day soccer than they did modern-day football.
- Rutgers took the contest 6-4 in a match that featured 10 "games," where one game ended once a team scored a goal. Each team had 25 players on the field at a time, and the ball, which was like a soccer ball, could be advanced only by kicking or hitting with the hands, feet or head -- it could not be carried or thrown. For that reason, many have called the declared it to be the first college soccer game ever.
- Of the 25 players on each side, one was more or less designated as the goalkeeper, 11 were defenders, 12 were "bulldogs," who were essentially attackers, and one was at the opposition's goal at all times, hoping to quickly score once the ball got into their offensive zone.
- Rutgers used a strategy of keeping the ball close to the ground at all times, as to take away the advantage of Princeton's taller players. It worked, as Rutgers "easily" scored two quick goals to end the match with a 6-4 win.
Sundays Aren't Bad
- The Argonauts hold an 8-1 record on the year on Sundays, which includes big conference wins over North Alabama and No. 6 Lee.
- Marjorie Boilesen has scored six times on Sundays and helped on eight more goals, giving her 20 points in those games. Kaley Ward has also added six scores, and Kaljit Atwal has three goals and five assists in those games.
- Katelyn Burkhart has been on fire in her Sunday performances. UWF has allowed just 1 goal in Burkhart's six Sunday starts, good for a 0.14 GAA for the keeper.
No Place Like Home
- The friendly confines of the UWF Soccer Complex have been a great spot for the Argos since 2001, as the team has put together a 130-15-4 record at home.
Emily Vogler Has Been Scoring Goals
- UWF Emily Vogler has tallied 10 goals on the year, which is remarkable considering the fact that she is a defender. The senior from Lynn Haven, Florida, has scored five goals in her last four games, and four of those have come against West Alabama in the regular season and in Friday's semifinal round of the GSC Tournament.
- Her career high coming into the season was two goals, which she scored in each of her first three years at UWF. She ranks seventh in the GSC in total goals.
