February 12, 2015 BOX SCORE: PDF | HTML PENSACOLA, Fla. – With runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings the No. 39-ranked University of West Florida pushed the No. 1-ranked Tampa Spartans into extra innings before falling 5-3 after 10 innings on Friday night. With the win, Tampa increases its win streak to 17 games and stands at 7-0 in 2016 while UWF sits at 2-3 on the young season.
UWF entered the bottom of the seventh facing a 3-0 deficit before a
Colby Brown sacrifice fly scoring Ledeavon Matthews was able to get UWF on the board. Shortstop
Alex Greene continued his solid start to the 2016 season with a clutch one-out RBI single to cut Tampa's lead to 3-2 in the eighth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Matthews struck out on a ball in the dirt and on the run down to first, a wild throw from Tampa catcher J.D. Osbourne allowed Matthews to reach second and give UWF a runner in scoring position with no outs.
Justin Ambrosino followed with an infield single, pushing Matthews over to third. In the next at bat, Brown forced another Tampa error, this time on shortstop Kevin Santa, which allowed Matthews to score the game-tying run.
Tampa immediately responded in the top half of the 10
th, as Vincent Miniet walked to start the inning. Casey Scoggins was able to reach on an error, while Kevin Santa followed up with a 2-RBI double to right field to score both Miniet and Scoggins.
West Florida was able to get two runners on in the bottom of the 10
th with singles from
Nic Strasser and
John Price, however Tampa pitcher Chris McCormick was able to prevent another UWF comeback and seal the 5-3 Spartan victory in the 10th.
Jarrod Petree came through with three solid relief innings, only allowing two hits and no runs against 11 batters faced. Petree, who also threw three impressive innings of relief on Tuesday against Mobile, now owns a 1.42 earned run average and a .105 opponent batting average in 2016.
Brandon Nagem got the start for UWF and after a pair of one-run innings for Tampa in the first and second, the lefty was able to settle in nicely. During a span from the top of the third to the top of sixth, Nagem retired 10 consecutive Tampa hitters including a top of the fifth where Nagem struck out the side in order. Nagem finished his effort throwing six innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and striking out seven while walking none.
Cole Crowder pitched a third of an inning in the 10
th and was credited with the loss.
Josh McLaney concluded the 10
th being able to draw a ground ball where Tampa was called for runner's interference.
Ambrosino and
Kyle Hamner each had two-hit performances to lead the Argos offensively. Brown led UWF with 2 RBI while Greene and Matthews were each able to stretch their hitting streaks to five.
UWF and Tampa are back at Jim Spooner Field tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. for game two of the three game series. Probable pitchers include
JT Granat for UWF and David Heintz for UT.
