No. 4 UWF men's tennis defeats AUM 7-2 in home opener

West Florida improves to 5-0 on the year after defeating Auburn Montgomery on Tuesday

BOX SCORE

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 4-ranked University of West Florida men's tennis team defeated the NAIA No. 2-ranked Auburn Montgomery Warhawks 7-2 in the team's home opener on Tuesday afternoon. West Florida (5-0, 3-0 GSC) took two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches in the win.

"It's always a battle between these two teams every year," head coach Derrick Racine said. "We started well in the doubles winning the top two. Heading into singles, (AUM) has a lot of scrappy players that get a lot of balls back and make you play, and that's kind of the way it was today."

"We jumped on them at one and two singles but three through six were all battles out there. This is what we need early in the year to learn how to gut out those matches so I'm really proud of the guys, it was a really good match today."

The No. 5-ranked doubles team of senior Kenny Brasil (Apucarana, Brazil) and junior Alex Peyrot (Castelnaudary, France) improved to 5-0 on the year by defeating Matias Destefanis and Santiago Veglia 8-1 at number one doubles.

Senior Juan Pablo Boada (La Paz, Bolivia) and junior Pedro Roese (Novo Hamburgo, Brazil) won their third straight match by defeating Vincent Dubosclard and Birkir Gunnarsson 8-4 at number two doubles.

Senior Pablo Borrero (Pereira, Colombia) and sophomore Sebastian Sanchez (Bogota, Colombia) fell to the NAIA's No. 22-ranked doubles team of Francisco Mendieta and Luis Vivas 7-9 at number three doubles.

No. 11 Peyrot improved to 4-0 on the year by defeating the NAIA's No. 39-ranked singles player Francisco Mendieta 6-0, 6-4 at number one singles while No. 22 Brasil got a win at number two singles by defeating Destefanis 6-1, 6-2.

Boada defeated the NAIA's No. 11-ranked singles player Vincent Dubosclard 5-7, 7-6, 10-8 at number three singles. Sanchez clinched the match at number four singles by defeating Gunnarsson 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at number four singes.

Junior Douglas Boe (Vinhedo, Brazil) defeated Veglia 6-2, 2-7, 6-4 at number six singles while Borrero fell to Vivas 2-6, 2-6 at number five singles.
