February 17, 2016 MOBILE, Ala. – The University of West Florida softball team split a doubleheader in Mobile against Spring Hill on Wednesday afternoon. With the Game 2 win, UWF improved its record against nonconference opponents to 8-2 on the year with a 9-4 mark overall.
Game 1: Spring Hill 8, UWF 0West Florida had trouble getting offense started against Caroline Sagrera, as only three Argonauts reached in Game 1.
Meghan Toney lined a single into center field in the top of the 1st,
Jessica Wilkinson and
Rachel Wright were hit by pitches in the second and third, respectively, and
Kathleen Smiley and
Chelsy Krantz each drew a walk.
Becca Taylor cruised through the first two innings, allowing just one Badger hit and producing five groundouts. Trouble struck in the third, however, as Spring Hill tallied eight hits, many of which were on groundballs that found their way between UWF defenders.
After Taylor induced a groundout to lead off the bottom of the third, SHC saw six of the next seven batters record hits. Spring Hill put up one more in the fourth, on an RBI double from Mary Glass.
Sarah Maloney came in relief of Taylor for the final inning-and-a-third, striking out two and allowing just two hits and one run.
Game 2: UWF 5, Spring Hill 2Kalyn Chapman started in the circle for UWF, going the distance and striking out eight while allowing just one walk. Chapman also chipped in offensively, with a single in the fifth and a walk in the second.
Both teams were held scoreless until the fifth when UWF took a lead on
Kathleen Smiley's bases-loaded walk. Chapman led the inning off with a single into center field and
Chelsy Krantz followed that with a grounder to short, and she reached when Carmen Byrd mishandled the ball in an attempt to throw to second. Toney put down a sacrifice bunt that moved both runners into scoring position with two outs and the heart of the order coming up.
Jacey Castro was hit by Danielle Clark to load the bases, which brought up Smiley. Smiley waited patiently and worked the count to 3-1 before Clark missed low for ball four to bring in the first UWF run. Freshman
Rhiannon Sassman ripped a single through the right side to bring in two more and stretch the lead to 3-0.
After SHC struck with a two-run home run in the sixth, UWF picked up two insurance runs in the seventh to put the lead at 5-2. The first came when
Jacey Castro stole second and
Rachel Wright took home on the throw from the catcher. Sassman brought in Castro just two batters later.
The Argos will head to Mississippi College for a three-game set, with Game 1 coming on Friday at 6:30 p.m., and a Saturday doubleheader scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
