MOBILE, Ala. –Â
Austin Somerfield recorded his eighth double-double of the season to help lead West Florida past Spring Hill, 81-69, at the Outlaw Recreation Center Wednesday night.
Â
Somerfield finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds and six assists as UWF (7-18) won for the fourth time in the last six games. In addition to his 9-for-18 effort from the floor, he was 8-of-9 at the foul line where he has made 80 percent over the last 10 games.
Â
"We did a pretty good job of controlling the game," UWF head coach
Jeff Burkhamer said. "They made one run early in the second half but other than that I thought we did a lot good things as a team to get the win. They didn't have anyone with Austin's quickness and strength and I thought we were able to exploit it."
UWF shot 55 percent in the first half en route to building a 41-37 lead. The Argos finished the night at 49 percent – their fourth-highest this season. UWF also shared the ball as well as it has all season, recording 17 assists – its second-most this season – on 26 field goals.
Â
Mario Stramaglia had 12 of his 18 points in the second half before finishing with three 3-pointers.
Â
The Argos turned the ball over a season-low eight times.
Â
Spring Hill (9-19) made 11 3-pointers and shot 43 percent in the contest. Sawyer Glick led all players with 27 points and five triples.
Â
Somerfield was unstoppable in the first half, scoring 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. The Argos scored the first seven points in the game and never looked back. Even when Spring Hill cut the margin to 11-9, UWF rattled off a 12-3 run to push its lead to 23-12 at the midway point in the period. The Badgers got to within one with just under a minute to play before
Jason Laatsch made the second of his two treys with a leaning 25-footer to beat the shot clock near the end of the half.
Â
The teams traded buckets to start the second half and Spring Hill pulled to within 43-42 before the squads combined to go on a scoring drought of five minutes. UWF found the bottom of the basket first and used a
Lendward Griffin dunk to key a 9-0 run. Stramaglia ended the stretch with a 3-pointer before adding a pair of free throws and another trey to give UWF a 57-44 edge with 9:54 remaining.
Â
UWF extended its lead to 71-56 with 2:20 remaining and made all six of its free throws to seal the game. The Argos made their final 10 from the charity stripe and were 22-of-25 in the game.
Â
UWF will close out the season on Saturday afternoon at home when it plays host to Valdosta State (16-10, 12-9). Tip off at the UWF Field House is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Griffin and redshirt junior
Justin Williams will be recognized in a ceremony after the game for their committment to the program.
