Kalyn Chapman earned her seventh victory in the circle and drove in the game-winning run in Game 2 in the University of West Florida softball team's doubleheader split over No. 3 Alabama Huntsville. Freshmen
Kathleen Smiley and
Rhiannon Sassman led UWF with three hits apiece, while
Jacey Castro drove in a team-best two runs on the day.
Game 1: UAH 6, UWF 0Becca Taylor struggled to get into a groove in the front end of Saturday's doubleheader against No. 3 UAH. After retiring the Chargers in order in the first inning, UAH tallied 11 hits over the following five innings against the junior. As usual, Taylor owned the strike zone, throwing strikes on 79 of her 115 pitches on the day and striking out three while walking a single batter.
Savannah Smith's first of three hits in the game brought in the first run for UAH in the third. Just two innings later, Jada Hayes stretched the Chargers lead to 3-0 with a single through the right side. Hayes went 2-3 with three RBIs on the day.
Huntsville scored one more in the fifth and two in the sixth to cap off its scoring.
West Florida's offense saw some trouble against UAH starter Tyler Harrison, who has been one of the elite pitchers in Division II this season. West Florida scattered three hits across seven innings, with those coming from
Tori Wilkins,
Kathleen Smiley and
Meghan Toney.
Emily Pettigrew's reached base streak of 10 games extended to 11 when she reached on an error in the first inning of Game 1, and Smiley stretched her current streak to nine. Taylor's season ERA stayed under 2.00, as it has for all but two games this season.
Game 2: UWF 5, UAH 4The first four Argonaut batters of the game reached base, ending with
Kathleen Smiley's RBI single to give UWF a 1-0 lead.
Jacey Castro hammered a single of her own to left field just two batters later that brought in two more runs and stretched the lead to 3-0.
A double from Kaitlyn Bannister and a sacrifice fly from Tyler Harrison cut the UWF lead to 3-2 after one frame.
Caitlin Steel led off the second by reaching on an error, and she was brought in shortly after with a
Rhiannon Sassman single to right field, giving UWF a 4-2 lead.
UAH chipped back to get two more in the fifth, when Hayes drove in a pair of runs with a two-out single to right.
A single from Sassman in the seventh kicked off a two-out rally for the Argos, during which they took the lead. Sassman, Smiley and
Kalyn Chapman recorded back-to-back-to-back singles, with Chapman's bringing Sassman around to score.
Kalyn Chapman struggled to locate in Game 2, walking six and striking out two over her seven innings of work, but she helped herself out offensively with two hits, a run scored and the game-winning RBI.
Chapman returned to the circle for the seventh with a one-run lead and did not disappoint. Though she allowed a double in the inning, she forced three popouts from UAH batters and escaped the inning unharmed to pick up her seventh victory of the year.
