UWF Splits Doubleheader with Montevallo in Two Pitchers' Duels

Argo pitching goes for two complete games, one shutout, 11 strikeouts, no walks

PENSACOLA, Fla. Becca Taylor and Kalyn Chapman threw complete games and allowed just one total earned run in the University of West Florida softball team's split with Montevallo University on Wednesday. UWF now stands with a 21-10 record on the year overall and is 8-1 at the UWF Softball Complex.

Freshman Rhiannon Sassman led all players with five total times on base in the doubleheader, going 2-3 with two walks and a hit by pitch. Emily Pettigrew extended her on-base streak to 16 games after being hit by a pitch in the fifth inning of Game 1 and singling in the third inning of Game 2.

GAME 1: West Florida 3, Montevallo 0
West Florida picked up the first run of the game in the first inning after Meghan Toney and Rhiannon Sassman had back-to-back singles with one away. With two outs, Jessica Wilkinson singled to the shortstop to advance each runner, and Toney came around to score when the Montevallo second baseman bobbled a throw from the shortstop and the ball went into shallow center field.

Wilkinson put another run on the board with her first home run of the season, a solo shot over the left field fence. The blast was the 11th of her career, which is the highest career total among active Argonauts.

Becca Taylor dazzled in the circle, allowing just four hits and striking out four in her ninth complete game and first shutout of the season. The Falcons came closest to scoring in the first and the fourth, starting in the beginning frame when Shelby Lopez reached on an error and stole second and third with one out. Taylor struck out Lady Sarah Federico and induced a groundout from Kelsey Vining for the third out of the inning. Maloney's season ERA dropped to 1.79 for her efforts.

Federico and Vining picked up one-out singles in the fourth to put two on with No. 5 hitter Kaitlynn Thomson coming up. Like in the first, Taylor struck out the next batter and forced a groundout to escape the jam.

Wilkinson and Toney led all players with two hits in the game, marking Toney's eighth multi-hit game of the year and Wilkinson's second. It was also Wilkinson's second multi-RBI game of the season and the 15th of her career.

GAME 2: Montevallo 2, West Florida 1
Bats were held silent for both teams through the first 3 ½ innings of action, as Kalyn Chapman came out in full form against the Falcons.

UWF scored in the fourth when Smiley reached on a fielder's choice and Chapman lifted a long double to the left field fence and brought in Smiley. The RBI was Chapman's 19th of the year, which is the third-most on the team, and the double tied her for the second-most extra-base hits on the team, with nine.

Montevallo evened the score in the top of the sixth with an unusual play. With two outs in the inning, Celestia Davila reached on a fielder's choice and stole second just a batter later. Catcher Shelby Lopez lifted a high fly ball into shallow right field. Miscommunication between Rachel Wright and Toney in right field and second base led to a single dropping in and allowed Davila to come around for the run.

Montevallo struck again in the seventh, when Thomson scored on a passed ball and gave UM a 2-1 lead. The Argos went down in order in the bottom half of the inning to end the game.

Chapman struck out seven over her seven innings of work, while allowing just three hits and walking none. The complete game was her sixth of the year.

West Florida will host West Georgia at the UWF Softball Complex over the weekend, with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. and the series finale on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
