BOX SCORE: PDF | HTML March 20, 2016 PENSACOLA, Fla. – Behind the University of West Florida baseball team's fifth shutout of the season, the Argonauts were able to win their fifth consecutive Gulf South Conference series after a 4-0 victory against West Georgia on Sunday.
UWF (16-11,10-5 GSC) got the scoring started early with
Nic Strasser scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first.
West Florida sent
JT Granat to the mound for today's rubber game. The Pensacola native would throw 5.1 shutout innings while allowing only five hits. It marks the second time this season West Florida has recorded a shutout in a game Granat has started. UWF's five shutouts on the season is the most in the GSC and is currently tied for second most in NCAA Division II.
Ladeavon Matthews had one of his three hits on the day in the fourth, singling to left field to bring home
Jean Figueroa and give UWF a 2-0 lead.
Jarrod Petree came in relief of Granat in the sixth with runners on first and second and one out. After a wild pitch allowed West Georgia runners to advance to second and third, Petree was able to record back-to-back strikeouts to end the UWG threat. Petree, who entered the game having stranded all eight runners he has inherited this year, maintained his perfect ratio and now has left all 10 runners he has inherited on base this season. Petree would allow just one base runner in 2.2 innings of work.
Ben Emery and
Michael Savas recorded back-to-back RBI singles in the sixth to give the Argonauts some insurance and grab a 4-0 lead. Emery, who entered the weekend with just one at bat, had a 3-for-6 weekend with an RBI and a double over his first two starts of the season.
After surrendering a leadoff single in the ninth,
Steve McClellan struck out UWG pinch hitter Matthew Pope and recorded back-to-back groundouts to close the door on UWF's 4-0 win.
West Georgia (16-8, 7-8 GSC) recorded six hits on the day, however the UWF pitching staff did not allow a UWG extra-base hit.
Heading into today's contest, UWG had not been shutout since April 6, 2013 when UWF was able to blank the Wolves 14-0 on the road. With today's shutout, it snapped a 130-game streak of the Wolves not being shutout.
Matthews led the Argonauts with three hits on the day after going 3-for-5 on Sunday. Emery and Savas were able to record multi-hit performances as they both went 2-for-3 on the afternoon.
UWF has won nine consecutive games against next weekend's opponent Christian Brothers and the Argos will look to continue that streak this upcoming weekend in Memphis. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader against the Bucs is slated for 12:00 p.m. CT.
