PENSACOLA, Fla. – The fourth-ranked UWF men's tennis team got out to an early lead before some untimely singles losses in absorbing a 5-4 loss to third-ranked Armstrong State at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex Saturday.
UWF (16-4) was coming off Thursday's emotional win over Hawai'I Pacific and once again, used a pair of doubles victories to gain the early momentum in what was a rematch of last year's NCAA Quarterfinal match.
The Argonauts grabbed doubles wins at Nos. 1 and 3 to open the early morning match. The No. 3-ranked duo of
Alex Peyrot and
Kenny Brasil defeated
Jan Porteset and
Alberto Caceres Casas, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles while
Pablo Tellez and
Pablo Borrero downed
Luca Cerin and
Otakar Lucak, 9-7, at No. 3 to give the home squad a 2-1 lead.
In singles play, ASU got three straight-set wins to take a 4-2 lead. No. 5-ranked Gor downed No. 36-ranked Boada, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1, while Porteset beat
Sebastian Sanchez, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5 and Casas bested Roese, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3..
UWF got a point back when seventh-ranked Peyrot defeated No. 22-ranked Lucak, 6-2, 6-4, to trim the margin to 4-3. But No. 38-ranked Hernandez clinched the match for ASU with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Borrero at No. 4. West Florida's No. 37-ranked Brasil won his sixth-consecutive singles match with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 win over Cerin at No. 3.
UWF will close out the regular-season on Sunday against NAIA No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett at 3 p.m.
