SAINT LEO, Fla. – The sixth-ranked UWF men's tennis team gave No. 1 Saint Leo all it could handle in the NCAA South Region I final before dropping the match in a 5-4 setback at the Saint Leo Tennis Center Monday.
Â
UWF ends the season at 19-7 and one victory shy of reaching the NCAA Round of 16. Saint Leo (24-1) advances to the NCAA Championships for the first time in school history and will face No. 15 Cameron on May 18 in Denver.
Â
"It was a great match, You have two of the top 5 teams in the nation and these matches could go either way," UWF head coach
Derrick Racine said. "I don't know if there was any one momentum shift. We could have won the match as easily as we lost it."
Â
The Argonauts opened up with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles spots to grab a 2-1 lead.
Â
Saint Leo tied it at 2-2 with a win at No. 2 singles when 15th-ranked Alex Theller defeated
Juan Pablo Boada, 6-1, 6-4.
Â
UWF regained the lead after 11th-ranked
Alex Peyrot came from a game down in the first set to win a tiebreak and claim a straight-set win over fourth-ranked Alberto Barroso-Campos, 7-6, 6-3.
Â
They extended the margin to 4-2 after
Kenny Brasil upset 19t-ranked Egor Panyushkin, 6-1, 0-6, 6-1.
Â
But that was all the team scoring the Argos would get as the Lions tied the match at 4-4 following 3-set victories at Nos. 6 and 4.
Â
The focus of the match then turned to the No. 5 spot where
Sebastian Sanchez dropped the final match to Guillaume Vanelven, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 as the Lion won the final three games in the third set.
