PENSACOLA, Fla. – Although a campus power outage forced the University of West Florida's volleyball match against Mississippi College to be moved to Pensacola State College, the Argonauts still turned in an electric performance against the Lady Choctaws to win its eighth consecutive match and stay perfect in Gulf South Conference action.
No. 22-ranked West Florida posted its fourth sweep of the year, topping Mississippi College 25-17, 25-16, 25-10. UWF improves to 10-4 on the year, while sitting atop the GSC standings at 6-0. MC falls to an even 7-7 on the year, while having a 1-6 league record.
MC came out the gates ready for action by taking a 3-0 lead in the first set. Whence UWF was able to even the score at 4-4 on a kill from
Rachel Neblett, UWF would not trail for the remainder of the set and go on to win 25-17.
With UWF leading just by a three-point margin in the second set at 16-13, the Argonauts would distance themselves by going on a 6-0 run to make the score 22-13 and put the set out of reach for the Choctaws. After MC responded with three consecutive points of its own, kills from
Katy Kuhlmeier and
Jordyn Poppen helped close out the second set and give UWF the 25-16 victory.
The Argos recorded its most dominant set victory of the season against MC in the third set, topping the Choctaws 25-10. With a 19-10 lead, UWF would utilize six consecutive points to close the match with a 25-10 third set triumph. In the third set, UWF recorded a dominating .500 attack percentage, while limiting MC to a lackluster -.160 success rate.
The defense shined for the Argonauts throughout the match, restricting the Choctaws to a dismal .010 attack percentage. UWF posted 12 blocks in the match, while having five players post four digs or more.
UWF's offense featured a cycle of impact players, as six players recorded at least four kills in the match. Kuhlmeier finished the match with a team-high seven kills, while
Kathryn Torre had an efficient night with five kills on just eight attempts for a .625 attack percentage. Poppen made the most of her night by recording four kills on five attempts in two sets of action.
Monique StCyr recorded 19 assists to help set up the Argonauts attack that recorded a solid .315 attack percentage for the match.
West Florida maintains its perfect 5-0 all-time record against Mississippi College, with all five UWF victories being 3-0 sweeps for the Argonauts. UWF now has won 55 consecutive home conference matches during the regular season.
UWF had a total of seven service aces in the match, including a pair each for Neblett and
Tori Martella. UWF limited its opponent to just one service ace for the fourth time in 2016.
West Florida looks to keep it rolling in GSC action this weekend in Tennessee, as the Argos visit Christian Brothers on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Union on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
