MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It was the first five-set match for the University of West Florida volleyball team in Gulf South Conference play this year, but the No. 22-ranked Argonauts were able to pull off the victory and extend its win streak to nine after topping the Bucs, 26-24, 16-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12.
UWF remains perfect in GSC play with a 7-0 record while sitting at 11-4 overall in 2016. CBU falls to 7-5 on the year and now has a 3-4 record in GSC action. West Florida also maintained its perfect 5-0 record in road contests with the win.
After the Argonauts jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first set, CBU utilized a 3-1 run to chip away and make the score 11-8. That would be the last three-point lead for either side in the first set, as the Argonauts and CBU would need more than the standard first-to-25 set with the score being tied at 24-24. With that tied score, senior middle blocker
Kathryn Torre took over and recorded back-to-back kills to end the set and hand UWF a 1-0 lead.
With the score in the second set tied at 6-6, CBU ran off five-consecutive points to create some breathing room and an 11-6 lead. The Bucs would not trail for the remainder of the set and eventually took the set by a 25-16 margin.
Heading into Friday night's match, UWF claimed third set victories after dropping the second set in five of seven opportunities. It would be no different for the Argonauts against Christian Brothers, as UWF would only trail on one occasion in the third set en route to taking a 2-1 lead after a 25-20 victory.
CBU refused to go away however, as in the late stages of the third set the score was tied at 22-22. The Bucs would go on to clinch the set by recording three of the next four points and force the match-deciding fifth set by winning on a slim 25-23 score.
Four kills from
Rachel Neblett and three kills from Torre ultimately proved to be the deciding factor in UWF clinching the fifth set,15-12. With the Argonauts leading 13-11, Neblett recorded each of UWF's last two points on kills set by
Monique StCyr.
Torre and Neblett paced the attack for the duration of the match, as the middle-blocker duo recorded 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Neblett converted at an astounding .591 clip and only committed one error in the contest.
StCyr recorded an impressive 55 assists to set up the Argonaut offense.
Senior
Tori Martella made a wave of history in a 22-dig performance against the Bucaneers, as the libero recorded her 1520
th career dig to pass her three-year-long teammate
Autumn Duyn for second in the program's career digs record. At 1,537 career digs, Martella stands just 169 digs shy of the program's top spot, which is currently held by Jerica Carter (2005-08) with 1,706 career digs.
Neither team hit at an ideal attack percentage for the match, as UWF was held to a .197 success rate which was slightly better than CBU's .183. The Argonauts prevailed over a strong defensive performance by the Buccaneers' blockers, who posted 12 on the evening while UWF was held to just two blocks on the night.
The Argonauts make an hour-and-a-half long trip from Memphis to Jackson, Tennessee to take on Union tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
