MATCH NOTES: UWF Volleyball Takes on Tough Colorado Premier Challenge Slate

PENSACOLA, Fla. –  The University of West Florida volleyball heads to the Colorado Premier Challenge for  its second weekend of the 2016 season. UWF will play No. 18 Colorado School of Mines at 4:30 p.m. CT on Friday and No. 5 Southwest Minnesota State at 8:00 p.m. UWF's two opponents and start times on Saturday are still to be determined and are based on the outcome of Friday's matches.
 
NEW YEAR, SAME AWARDS: Senior Tori Martella got right back into her award-winning ways to start the 2016 season by taking Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors… The libero from Jacksonville tallied a GSC-high 90 digs over the weekend, averaging six digs per set… The next closest player came in at 4.67 digs per set…  Martella's 35 digs against a No. 9-ranked Central Missouri squad was the second most for a single match in program history… It was the third time in Martella's career she has earned the weekly award from the conference.
 
RECAPPING HAMPTON INN-VITATIONAL: UWF certainly faced a tough test in its opening weekend of the season, facing two top 10 teams as host of the 2016 Hampton Inn-vitational… UWF opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over Findlay, before dropping a 3-2 decision against Central Missouri… UWF faced a 2-0 deficit against UCM and nearly pulled off the comeback by forcing a fifth set… The following day, UWF would sweep Carson-Newman 3-0, before falling to defending NCAA Division II National Champions Wheeling Jesuit 3-0 on ESPN3's Division II Game of the Week… Kathryn Torre, Monique StCyr and Rachel Neblett were all named to the 2016 Hampton Inn-vitational All-Tournament team by the five participating head coaches.
 
COLORADO PREMIER CHALLENGE HISTORY: In what is widely regarded as one of the top Division II tournaments each year, the Argonauts have a 13-15 all-time record in the Colorado Premier Challenge, including a 7-5 mark in its last three appearances.
 
THE FIELD: The 2016 field includes three top-5, five top-10 and seven top-20 clubs while 11 of 12 teams are ranked by the AVCA or receiving votes. This year's field includes No. 1 Concordia St. Paul, No. 2 Wheeling Jesuit, No. 5 Southwest Minnesota State, No. 6 Central Missouri, No. 8 Lewis, No. 18 Colorado Mines, No. 19 Angelo State, No. 21 Arkansas-Fort Smith, West Florida, Metro State, Saint Leo and Regis.
 
SCOUTING COLORADO MINES: West Florida's first game will be against No. 18 Colorado Mines, who went a perfect 4-0 in its opening weekend after posting a 27-6 record in 2015… The Orediggers reached the semifinals of the NCAA South Central Regional in 2015… Alanna Winfield posted a team-best 4.64 kills per set in the team's opening week… Delaney Duis posted 9.85 assists per set, while Taryn Huber leads the team with 4.93 digs per set… It will be the first-ever meeting between UWF and Colorado Mines.
 
SCOUTING SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE: The Mustangs opened the 2016 season in Illinois and finished its weekend with a 3-1 record… Southwest Minnesota State went 26-6 last year and reach the semifinals of the Central Regional tournament… The 2014 NCAA Division II National runner-ups were led by Taylor Reiss (5.67 kills/set),  Amber Messner (4.6 digs/set) and Megan Larson (12.93 assists/set) in the Mustangs opening weekend… UWF is 1-3 all-time against Southwest Minnesota State… Last year Southwest Minnesota State made a visit to Pensacola and topped the Argonauts in a five-set thriller, 3-2… Cora Bidlack posted a team-high 11 kills, while Monique StCyr recorded 38 assists in the setback.
