ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The No. 1 ranked UWF men's tennis team got a dominating doubles performance on its way to another shutout victory, defeating No. 4 Hawaii Pacific 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship at Sanlando Park Wednesday.
UWF won its 24th-consecutive match as it improved to 30-1 and advanced to the national semifinals for the 12th time in the last 21 years. The Argonauts will face No. 23 Southwest Baptist (15-4) on Thursday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time. Hawaii Pacific – the defending national champion – ended its season at 17-5 and was eliminated prior to the semifinals for the first time in the last four years.
"Doubles was key again to get us some momentum," UWF head coach
Derrick Racine said. "We were down a couple breaks in doubles and fought back to win all three matches. It makes it a totally different match when you can sweep doubles.
"That also allows us to play three guys in singles that didn't have to play doubles, so those guys are that much fresher when playing in the 94-degree heat."
Warren Kuhn and
Pablo Tellez remained unbeaten in 14 matches with an 8-4 win at the No. 3 position.
Alex Peyrot and
Pedro Dumont opened up a 5-2 lead to claim an 8-5 win at the top spot, moments before
Gabriel Dias and
Pedro Roese rode an emotional match to an 8-6 win.
UWF was in control in singles throughout and got wins at No. 6 from
Sebastian Sanchez and at No. 3
Serdar Bojadjiev.
The Argos are now 17-2 all time at Sanlando Park. The appearance in the NCAA Championships marks the 16th for UWF and its fifth in the last six years. The Argos have previously won the national title in 2004, 2005 and 2014.
