UWF Baseball Hosts Spring Hill Thursday, Opens Conference Play Sunday

Argos look to take second straight vs. Badgers tomorrow

PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF baseball (3-6) will take on Spring Hill (2-7) Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at Jim Spooner Field and travel to North Alabama to open conference play Sunday and Monday.

The Argos (3-6) are coming off an 8-3 win vs. Spring Hill (2-7) to wrap the Argo Invitational last Sunday. UWF's eight runs were a season-high, as were the team's 16 hits. Every spot in the order reached at least twice for the Argos. Matthew Jones became the first Argo to reach base five times this season, and Trevor Payne finished the day with four hits.
 

SCHEDULE CHANGE VS. SPRING HILL

* The threat of inclement weather has caused a schedule change for UWF baseball's upcoming game vs. Spring Hill. The Argos will now battle the Badgers Thursday, Feb. 22 at 5:00 p.m. The teams were originally scheduled to meet Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 5:00 p.m.
 

SCHEDULE CHANGE AT NORTH ALABAMA

* The threat of inclement weather has caused a schedule change for both UWF softball and UWF baseball at North Alabama this weekend.

* UWF baseball will also now play at North Alabama Sunday and Monday. The Argos and Lions will meet in a doubleheader beginning Sunday at 3:00 p.m. and conclude play with a single game Monday at 2:00 p.m.
 

UWF GOES 1-2 AT ARGO INVITATIONAL

* UWF baseball dropped its first contest at the Argo Invitational Friday evening, falling at Jim Spooner Field 10-6 to the No. 2/5 Tampa Spartans. UT built a 10-0 lead after 4 ½ innings before the Argos roared back for six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fifth. The home team could get no closer though.

* The team dropped its second game of the Argo Invitational Saturday evening, suffering a heartbreaking 8-7 extra-inning loss to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish at Jim Spooner Field. The Argos, who battled back from 1-0 and 4-1 deficits in, took a one-run lead into the ninth before ultimately falling in the 10th.

* The Argos snapped a three-game losing skid by downing Spring Hill College 8-3 Sunday at Jim Spooner Field. The eight runs were a season-high, as were the team's 16 hits. The game was the final of the Argo Invitational.

ARGOS OPEN GSC PLAY AT NORTH ALABAMA

* Sunday's games vs. the Lions will be the first 2018 GSC games for UWF. Last year, the Argos finished 17-15 in GSC play. The 2017 Argos finished 7-7 in GSC road games.

* In 2017, the Argos went 1-3 vs. the Lions. The team dropped two of three in a series vs. North Ala. March 4-5. UWF and North Alabama met again in the GSC Tournament, where the Argos suffered a 5-4 defeat in their tournament-opening game.

* In Mike Jeffcoat's tenure as head coach (2006-present), UWF has gone 174-106 in GSC play. UWF is 279-233 in Gulf South play since 1995.
 

SCOUTING NORTH ALABAMA

* UNA is currently 6-3 overall. The team is 6-0 and 0-3 away. The Lions have won six straight. UNA was swept in a season-opening series vs. Point Loma Nazarene. The team has won six straight since dropping that series.

* The Lions had three players selected to the preseason All-GSC squad. Senior first baseman Kyle Hubbuch, senior pitcher Tyler Joyner, and junior third baseman Davis Elliott were all named to the preseason team. All three were all-GSC selections last season.

* UNA was selected to finish third in the 2018 GSC preseason poll of conference coaches. North Alabama finished 2017 with a 34-19 record. This year's team returns 18 lettermen, including seven starters.

* University of North Alabama is ranked sixth in the initial 2018 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association NCAA Division II South Region poll.

* UNA's Tyler Joyner and Kyle Hubbuch were named to the pre-season All-South Region squad by the NCBWA.
