PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF baseball (12-8, 4-2 GSC) will return to conference play Sunday and Monday with a three-game set at Christian Brothers (5-12, 1-5 GSC).
The Argos have been playing their best baseball of the season, going 7-0 on the most recent homestand. Most recently, the Argos completed the sweep of No. 16 Southern Indiana with a 12-7 victory Wednesday. UWF has accumulated 74 runs and 99 hits during the win streak.
TIME CHANGES AT CBU
* Sunday's doubleheader between UWF baseball (12-8, 4-2 GSC) and Christian Brothers (5-12, 1-5 GSC) is now scheduled for noon. The games will be the first of a three-game set between the two teams at Nadicksberndt Field.
* The series has already undergone significant scheduling changes due to the threat of inclement weather. The series was originally scheduled to be played Saturday and Sunday. The initial reschedule called for a 1:00 p.m. start Sunday. The series will still close with a single game Monday at noon.
ARGOS SURGING OFFENSIVELY
* Brandon Harmon has been a key part of UWF's recent offensive surge. The senior has now reached base in 15 straight games and has his average up to .396, the ninth-highest mark in the conference. He is one of three Argos (along with Nic Strasser and Joey Bend) who have reached base in at least seven straight games.
* The Argos are now hitting .311 as a team, the fourth-highest average in the GSC. Nick Kerkmann paces the squad with seven multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI games. Joey Bend is the current owner of the longest hit streak on the team at seven. He has also accumulated at least one RBI in eight straight games and 10 of 12 games overall this season.
* Matthew Jones, who hit two home runs vs. No. 16 USI, including a walkoff, Tuesday has five hits in his last nine at-bats. Matt Sullivan has four hits (including a home run) and five RBIs in the last two games.
CONTINUED PITCHING EXCELLENCE
* West Florida currently has the second-lowest ERA in the GSC at 3.59. The staff has limited opponents to a .233 average, which is the lowest number in the conference.
* During the seven-game win streak, the staff has limited opponents to 15 earned runs, seven of which came vs. Southern Indiana Wednesday. During the streak, the Argos have accumulated 55 strikeouts. The Argos have allowed just one home run in the last eight games.
* Alex Knight continues to put together one of the best seasons for a relief pitcher in the GSC. He has now gone 11.2 innings without surrendering an earned run. He has struck out 16 and walked 3 in ten appearances this year.
SCOUTING CHRISTIAN BROTHERS
* The Bucs check into the series at 5-12 overall and 1-5 in GSC play. The Bucs are 1-6 at home this season and 4-6 away.
* CBU won its first conference game of the season vs. Montevallo but has since dropped five straight in GSC play. The Bucs were swept by West Georgia three games to none Feb. 23-24 by an aggregate of 38-3. The team bounced back with a 3-2 win over LeMoyne Owen Mar. 7.
* This year's roster features five seniors and 18 freshmen. CBU is currently being led offensively by Jamie Soto, who is hitting .310. Larry Hubbard is second on the team with a .302 batting average. The Bucs are hitting just .206 overall as a team.
* Gil Erwin is the owner of the team's lowest ERA at 3.22, but he stands at 0-3 on the season. The Bucs staff currently holds a 6.53 ERA while opposing staffs have posted a 2.44 ERA vs. CBU bats.
