PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF baseball (16-9, 8-3 GSC) travels to Albany State (9-9, 1-1 SIAC) Tuesday and Wednesday for a quick two-game series at Albany State. The Argos will return home this weekend to take on Alabama Huntsville. Game 1 will begin at 6:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. CT Tuesday. The teams will close the series with a 2:00 p.m. ET/1:00 p.m. CT game Wednesday.
The Argos are have won 11 out of their last 12 games. UWF most recently split its doubleheader Saturday at Mississippi College, winning the first game 15-4 before dropping the second 5-2. With the split, the Argos and Choctaws (16-4, 8-3 GSC) remain in a tie for second in the GSC. Both teams now sit two games behind Delta State (19-2, 10-1 GSC) for the conference lead.
ARGOS RISE IN NCBWA SOUTH REGION POLL
* UWF baseball (16-9, 8-3 GSC) rose in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II South Region Top 10, checking in at No. 7. UWF travels to Albany State tonight for a 6:00 p.m. ET opener to a two-game series.
* Delta State once again topped the NCBWA South Region Poll with 90 points and all nine first-place votes. Florida Southern, Tampa, Mississippi College and Saint Leo rounded out the Top 5. Palm Beach Atlantic sits at No. 6. West Florida garnered 36 points to rise two spots to No. 7 after tying for 9th last week with West Georgia. Nova Southeastern is No. 8, Rollins is No. 9, and Alabama Huntsville rounds out the Top 10.
OFFENSE STAYS HOT
* The Argos have hit .356 over the last five games while holding opponents to a .263 average. UWF has outscored opponents 50-16 over that span. The team has outhit opponents 62-40 over the last five games.
* The Argos have six bats hitting at least .350 over the last five games. Robert Lopez has racked up six hits in his last 13 at-bats (.462) to pace the team. Nic Strasser has 10 hits in his last 22 at-bats (.455). Joey Bend is 8 for his last 19 (.421), as is Matthew Jones. Bend and Strasser have each scored eight runs over the last five games.
* Leadoff men have been very effective in the last five games, reaching base in 20 of 40 opportunities (.500 OBP). The Argos have dominated vs. right-handed pitching vs. Christian Brothers and Mississippi College, going 50 of 124 for a .403 average.
ARGOS SPLIT IN CLINTON
* UWF baseball split its doubleheader Saturday at Mississippi College, winning the first game 15-4 before dropping the second 5-2. The win in Game 1 extended the team's season-best win streak to 11 games.
* Nic Strasser enjoyed another solid day at the plate, pacing the team in Game 1 with three hits, including a home run, and adding another hit in Game 2. Reigning GSC Pitcher of the Week Dylan Mills-Derouen (3-0) got the start for the Argos in Game 1. He was tagged for three runs on two walks, a hit-by-pitch, an error and a single in the first. From there though, he settled in to allow just three hits and one run over the next five innings. He exited the game after the sixth, throwing 100 pitches in picking up his third straight win.
SCOUTING ALBANY STATE
* Albany State stands at 9-9 this season and 1-1 in the SIAC. The team is 7-6 at home and 2-3 away. The Golden Rams have lost three of their last four games.
* Albany State has a .271 team batting average this year and are being led by Riliani Familia, who is hitting .379 with four home runs and 25 RBIs. As a team, the Golden Rams have six home runs and 79 RBIs.
* Michael Reddick and Roman Oliu have led the Golden Rams pitching staff. Reddick owns a 2-1 record across seven appearances and three starts. He paces the team in earned run average at 1.73. Oliu has a 2.39 ERA and a 3-0 record across seven appearances five starts.
* UWF baseball is 1-0 vs. Albany State since 1991.
