Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. – The No. 12 UWF Men's Tennis team (14-2, 6-0) stormed back from a 2-4 setback to upset No. 6 Columbus State University (12-3, 5-0) in a nerve racking 5-4 victory at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
The Argos snapped a 6-match winning streak accumulated by the Cougars, and they have boosted their record to 14-2, six of those wins have been against ranked opponents.
The Argos encountered immediate battles on all three doubles courts. On court three after back and forth holds the entire pro set, Nicolas LeCoutre and Juan Cabrera broke their opponents at 6-6 to go up 7-6 and serving for the match. This undefeated duo remained solid after this break of serve, and LeCoutre blasted an ace on match point to add a point for the Argos. The Cougars relentlessly dug deep on the other two courts, and they secured final two points in the doubles.
UWF had ground to make up, and the Cougars increased their lead to 3-1 after a win straight sets on court six. The Argos responded by adding their own point from court two after No. 33 Bojedjiev downed No. 44 Whaanga 6-4, 6-2. Only minutes later, Regalado narrowed the gap even more after defeating Sanchez with one break per set. At 4-2, the Cougars needed only one more point to capture the victory against the Argos, and all remaining courts were left in tight clashes. The tides began to turn once LeCoutre earned his first top five ranked victory over reigning national champion No. 2 Pannu. Rafaitin brought things even at 4-4 after closing out Avram 7-6, 6-3. With the deciding match down to court four, Cabrerra found himself up an early break 3-0 in the second set. His opponent threw everything he had and evened the set up at 4-4. The Argentine was untroubled by this push, and he clinched this epic victory with a screaming forehand passing shot down the line.
The Argos will now head home for Gulf South Conference action, where they will take on No. 13 Valdosta State University on Thursday at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
