PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF baseball (10-8, 4-2 GSC) completed the sweep of Union (5-12, 1-5 GSC) with a 7-1 victory at Jim Spooner Field Sunday. Kirk Maddox (1-2) picked up the first win of his UWF career by scattering five hits and allowing just one run (one earned) over 6.1 innings. The Argos will next host Southern Indiana at Jim Spooner Field starting Tuesday.

"Kirk Maddox did a great job for us today," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "We talked about keeping the momentum, coming out throwing strikes and playing defense, and Kirk had his best outing of the year, I thought."

Argo pitching surrendered just four runs over the three-game series vs. the Bulldogs. Maddox struck out a season-best nine batters en route to the win. Chase Evans and Alex Knight combined to fire a scoreless final 2.2 innings to complete the victory.

UWF tagged Union starter JR Miller (2-3) for seven runs and five hits over three innings. Joey Bend paced the Argo attack with two hits and two RBIs. Nic Strasser compiled one hit, two walks and two runs scored. Brandon Harmon finished 1 for 3 with a run scored as well.

UWF opened a 2-0 lead in the first via an RBI groundout from Nick Kerkmann and an RBI single by Bend. The team added four more in the third and one more in the fourth to put the game away.

"It was great to come out here on Sunday with the same energy that we had yesterday to finish up this series sweep," said Jeffcoat.

The conference sweep was the first of the season for UWF. The Argos will host Southern Indiana at Jim Spooner Field starting at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The team will close the two-game set vs. the Screaming Eagles (5-4) Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
