PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF baseball (11-8, 4-2 GSC) earned its first walkoff win of the season in dramatic style Tuesday, downing No. 16 Southern Indiana (5-5) 8-6 on a dramatic 10th inning home run by Matthew Jones. The win was also the first this season for the Argos vs. a ranked opponent. UWF has now won six straight.
"It was great to get a win. Southern Indiana obviously has a quality ballclub. It was a great test for us," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat.
The Argos tagged Screaming Eagles starter Devin Williams for two runs in the first on a 2-RBI double by Matt Sullivan. Jones deep for the first time in the fourth to make it 3-2. The team would build the lead to 4-3 on a sacrifice fly by Sullivan and 5-3 on an RBI base hit by Robert Lopez in the fifth.
Starter Hunter Lucas went five innings, exiting the game with the Argos up 5-3. The southpaw allowed six hits and three runs (one earned) before giving way to Avery Geyer, who was tagged for three runs (two earned) over 1.1 innings.
Josh Pahlad (2-0) pitched the final 3.2 innings of the game for the Argonauts. He helped to pick a runner off third to keep the game 6-6 in the 7th and foiled a squeeze play in the 9th before stranding a man in scoring position in the 10th. Pahlad scattered four hits while striking out three on his way to his second collegiate win.
"Josh Pahlad came in and did a fantastic job holding them right there after they tied it up 6-6," said Jeffcoat.
The Argos opened a 6-4 lead in the sixth on an RBI single from Joey Bend before the Screaming Eagles took advantage of shaky Argo defense in the 7th to capitalize for two runs and tie the game. UWF committed four errors on the night.
After Pahlad left Bryce Krizan on second in the top of the 10th, Jones smacked his second homer of the game with Mason Dinesen aboard to give the Argos an 8-6 win. The shot came off Screaming Eagles relief man Kyle Griffin (0-1).
"I knew it was gone, right off the bat when he hit it," said Jeffcoat. "It was a line shot on to the left field party deck. It was just a matter of it was going to stay fair or go foul. It stayed fair by three or four feet. It was a good night, and alway good to have a walkoff home run."
UWF and No. 16 Southern Indiana meet again tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. Lefty Jared Middleton (0-0, 5.40 ERA) is expected to start for the Argos.
