No. 8 UWF Extend Win Streak To Seven

UWF makes it seventeen wins after Saturday victories against GSC opponents

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 8 UWF Men's Tennis Team (17-2, 9-0) continues to roll in Gulf South Conference play after blanking Shorter University (2-8, 0-6) at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex and controlling Mississippi College (6-8, 1-6) 7-2 at the Roger Scott Tennis Center.

The Argos are now the only team in the GSC to remain undefeated in conference play and have earned an automatic berth into the GSC Championships.

As a change up to the normal routine, the Argos began play with the singles matches. On courts five and six, Nicholas Springer and Gerard Rodriguez pounded past their opponents with 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0, respectively. Lucas Sanchez and Juan Motta added two more points to the overall score after their straight sets wins on courts two and four. GSC Player of the Week No. 55 Cabrera clinched the match after a 6-3, 6-3 victory on court three. To wrap up the singles, No. 47 LeCoutre battled back from a set down to overcome Moreno 6-7, 6-4, 10-2.

After shutting out the Hawks in the singles, the No. 8 Argos continued their strong performances in doubles by downing each of their opponents in pro sets.

Moments after blanking the Hawks, the Argos packed up their rackets and headed straight to the Roger Scott Tennis Complex for their second match of the day against Mississippi College. The normal format was applied to this match, and the Argos kicked off this GSC match with the doubles. The Argos showed no signs of fatigue from their previous match only hours earlier, and the third pair LeCoutre and Cabrera extended their impressive 10 match winning streak after dominating Damjanovic and Barrick 8-2. The other two courts, however, were fighting in tight battles against their Choctaw opponents. It appeared that Mississippi College would even up the match on court two after Menezes and Nilges owned a 5-2 break against No. 44 Springer and Castellano. The Argos, however, had no plans of easily surrendering the match, and they fought back to secure the second point of the day with a thrilling 9-7 victory. Last on was court one, where No. 36 duo Serdar Bojedjiev and Lucas Sanchez were holding back and forth service games against No. 14 Rocca and Valy. The Swedish-Brazilian duo forced their opponents to a deciding tiebreaker, but they were unable to withstand the Choctaw's booming serves and tactful volleys.

With a 2-1 upper hand after the doubles, the reigning National Champions displayed their control in singles, winning five out of six of the matches. On courts three and five, Sanchez and No. 62 Rafaitin both came off with 6-1, 6-3 victories over their opponents. The clinch came from court six as Motta also downed Damjanovic with a score of 6-1, 6-3. On court two, No. 9 Bojedjiev raced past No. 75 Menezes 6-3, 6-1, and No. 55 Cabrera extended his 17 match winning streak after a 6-2, 6-2 win over Gonzalez. The lone singles point for the Choctaws came from court one after No. 25 Valy escaped the hands of No. 47 LeCoutre in a third set tiebreaker.

The Argos will continue their Gulf South Conference play with three matches on Friday, April 6th at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. Their opponents include University of West Georgia, Delta State University, and Christian Brothers University, and the first match is set to begin at 9 am CT.
