PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF baseball (25-11, 15-5 GSC) will host the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks (15-22, 5-16 GSC) at Jim Spooner field in a three-game series starting with a Friday doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. The teams will close the series with a 11:00 a.m. single game Saturday.
The Argos are coming off a series win at Lee Saturday and Sunday. UWF was victorious over Lee Saturday to open the series. Avery Geyer picked up the win. Matthew Jones and Jacob Silverstein each went deep to power the Argos in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. Matthew Estrada reached base four times in the doubleheader. Dylan Mills-Derouen picked up the win Sunday after recording seven strikeouts in seven innings.
SCHEDULE CHANGES
* The threat of inclement weather in the Pensacola area this weekend has caused scheduling changes for No. 23 UWF baseball's upcoming series vs. Auburn Montgomery.
* The Argos (25-11, 15-5 GSC) and Warhawks (15-22, 5-16 GSC) will now play a doubleheader Friday beginning at 3:00 p.m. and close the series with a single game at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The teams were originally scheduled to meet in a 6:00 p.m. single game on Friday and a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
* The series will be Military Appreciation Weekend at Jim Spooner Field. Anyone with a Military ID will receive free admission to the games. The weekend will also feature free military hat and T-shirt giveaways.
GSC STANDINGS
* The Argos currently sit in second place in the GSC standings at 15-5. Delta State is in first place with a record of 17-3. North Alabama, Mississippi College, and Montevallo round out the Gulf South Conference Top 5.
* UWF will close the season with series vs. Auburn Montgomery, Montevallo, and Valdosta State. The combined conference record of the final three opponents for UWF is 25-36.
* Delta State closes the regular season with conference series vs. Lee, North Alabama and Mississippi College. The combined conference of the final three opponents for DSU is 41-21.
UWF RISES IN REGIONAL POLL
* UWF baseball rose one spot in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II South Region Top 10, coming in at No. 5.
* The Argos are coming off another series win over the weekend at Lee University. UWF has won 20 of the last 23 games. The Argos have won or split their last six conference series.
* This is the fifth straight week in the Top 10 for West Florida. The team entered the poll tied for ninth with West Georgia, rose to No. 7 and then to No. 4 before dropping back to No. 6 last week.
UWF REMAINS IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL TOP 25
* The Argos are nationally-ranked, checking in at No. 23 in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll for the second straight week.
* Azusa Pacific (27-3) again topped the national poll, and Florida Southern (29-4-1), the South Region's highest-ranked team, moved up from No. 3 to No. 2. Three of the nation's Top 5 came from the South Region, with Tampa (28-5) coming in at No. 4 and Delta State (28-6) checking in at No. 5. West Florida and Delta State were the only GSC teams in this week's Top 25. North Alabama (25-12) came in at No. 27.
GSC LEADERS
* UWF currently leads the Gulf South Conference with a 3.74 team ERA. The Argos are ranked fourth offensively with a .319 team average and are second with a .966 fielding percentage.
* Matt Sullivan is tied for second in the conference with 14 doubles. Matthew Jones is currently 11th in the GSC with a .366 average. Nic Strasser is tied for fifth with a .477 OBP. Strasser, who has missed the last three weeks because of injury, remains tied for eighth with 22 walks.
* Alex Knight currently ranks fifth in the GSC with an ERA of 0.57. Dylan Mills-Derouen is tenth with an ERA of 1.71. Mills-Derouen is fourth in the conference with an opposing average of .154.
ESTRADA SWINGING HOT BAT
* Matt Estrada has hit safely in six of the last seven games. He has multi-hit games in four of those six games. He has also drawn three walks over the last four games and scored six runs over the last five games.
* Estrada was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman Player of the Week Apr. 3 following a memorable performance during the Argos' series win vs. West Georgia.
* Estrada finished with four hits, including one double, and scored five runs in three games vs. the Wolves. He also drew two walks. Estrada scored the third and final run of the ninth inning in the Argos' 8-7 win in the series finale.
SCOUTING AUM
* Auburn Montgomery dropped to 15-22 with an 11-0 loss to Shorter Apr. 9. The Warhawks now sit at 5-16 in GSC play. The team is not eligible for the postseason. AUM is 11-10 at home this season and 4-12 on the road.
* Nathan Langley paces the Warhawks team with a .387 batting average. He has 52 hits and 20 RBIs on the season. Hayden Friesen is second on the team with a .324 batting average. Logan Nix is hitting .311.
* Langley has proven to be an extremely effective two-way player this year, also posting excellent numbers as a relief pitcher. Langley has made ten appearances (nine in relief) this season for the Warhawks, throwing 25 innings. He currently owns a 2-1 record with a 1.44 ERA. He has 22 strikeouts vs. just seven walks. He is the only pitcher for AUM this season with at least five appearances and an ERA under 3.86.
* AUM most recently dropped two of three games vs. Shorter, taking a tight opener 3-2 before dropping the final two games of the series by finals of 11-2 and 11-0. The team has scored four runs or fewer in six of its last seven games.
* The Argos are 13-11 vs. Auburn Montgomery since 1991. The Argos met AUM twice last year, winning by finals of 8-0 and 4-1.
