Geyer, Sullivan Star As UWF Baseball Wraps GSC Tournament With A Win

UWF downs Montevallo 7-1, awaits potential South Regional bid

CLEVELAND, Miss. –  UWF baseball (32-19) wrapped its time at the GSC Tournament with a 7-1 win vs. Montevallo (35-17) Tuesday. Avery Geyer threw a five-hit complete game, and Matt Sullivan powered the offense with two homers and a career-best six RBIs.

"We just wanted to come out today and finish with pride, playing for the name on the front of the jersey," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "Wanted to make sure we finished this season on the right note, if it was our last game. Hopefully we put ourselves in a position for the Regional."

Geyer went the full nine, limiting Montevallo to just one run on five hits while striking out eight and walking just one. He has now struck out 17 over his last 16.2 innings pitched. The start was his first of the season. He threw 111 pitches to notch the Argos' second complete game of the Tournament. Tony Kucera threw a complete game Sunday in a 6-3 win over West Georgia.

"Geyer, what a great game, coming out throwing a CG for us," said Jeffcoat. "I mean, just hardly made a mistake pitch today."

Sullivan started the scoring with a solo home run in the second. In the third, after Nick Kerkmann made the game 2-0 with a sacrifice fly, Sullivan again delivered with a bases-clearing double. He would add another solo homer in the fifth to complete a historic day at the plate. Sullivan has now racked up four home runs and 11 RBIs over the last two GSC Tournaments.

"Matt Sullivan with two home runs, a double, six RBIs, 3 for 3 on the day. Guys around him were getting on base, all around a great team effort, said Jeffcoat.

Chrit Rudkin (5-3) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (four earned) over 2.1 innings. The win improved Geyer to 2-1 on the season. Matthew Jones finished the game 2 for 3 with two runs scored. The Argos outhit the Falcons 8-5. The win evened the season series between the two teams 2-2. The Argos finish the GSC Tournament 2-1.

The Argos will await a potential bid to the South Regional. The final NCAA South Region rankings of the season will be released tomorrow, and the Selection Show is slated for May 13.

"Just want to congratulate our Argos for showing a lot of pride, and hopefully we put ourselves in a position for a Regional bid," said Jeffcoat.
