HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - No.10 West Florida dropped a 3-1 decision at Alabama Huntsville, 3-1 (25-15, 25-27, 24-26, 17-25) to open Gulf South Conference play at Spragins Hall Tuesday night.
The loss snapped a 6-match winning streak for UWF (8-4, 0-1 GSC). After winning the first set, the Argonauts had set points in both the second and third sets but were unable to close-out the frames.
Jordyn Poppen and JoDee Kovanda had 10 kills apiece to lead the UWF offense. The Argos hit just .167 in the match
The Argos opened in the first set with a 3-0 lead. UAH came and tied the game 6-6 and after that UWF took off and gained a 15-9 lead. The Argos won in the end 25-15. As a team UWF hit a .129 compared to UAH who hit a -.105. UWF also led in kills 10-6.
In the second, UWF led for the first 21 points before UAH went on a 5-0 run to gain control at 14-11. The Argos tied it at 23-23 and served for the set twice before the Chargers scored the final three points for a 27-25 win. Poppen, and Kovanda each had four kills in the frame.
UWF led the third set 15-9 before UAH's offense started to come alive with a 12-6 run to tie it at 21-21. The teams traded the next four points before a Nadine Williams kill put the Argos ahead 24-23. But again, the Chargers' final push was too much for UWF as the home squad got two kills from Jordan Grammar and a block assist from Isabelle Barnes and Hannah Lawless for the 26-24 win.
The fourth set saw the Argos fall behind 6-2 and by as many as 20-11 before they were able to get their first consecutive points of the set. UAH won the fourth 25-17 for the upset win.
UAH (10-2, 1-0 GSC) defeated the Argonauts for just the sixth time in program history. The Chargers had 14 blocks in the contest. Grammar led them with 13 kills.
UWF will return to action at Mississippi College this Friday night. First serve in Clinton, Miss. is at 5:00 p.m.
