Argos Open Long Homestand This Weekend vs. No. 20 Mississippi College

UWF and Mississippi College begin three-game series Friday at 6:00 p.m.

PENSACOLA, Fla. –
UWF baseball will take on No. 20 Mississippi College in a three-game set to begin a nine-game homestand this weekend. First pitch vs. the Choctaws is slated for 6:00 p.m. Friday evening. The series will conclude with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
 
The Argos (8-6, 5-1 GSC) are 5-1 to start Gulf South play and have won six of their last eight games. The team's bats broke out with a 27-run, 35-hit performance in a doubleheader sweep at AUM last Sunday to help clinch a second GSC series.
 
UWF TAKES TWO OF THREE AT AUBURN MONTGOMERY
 
* The Argo bats enjoyed a banner day as UWF baseball swept a doubleheader at Auburn Montgomery Sunday 15-2 and 12-8. The Argos return home to begin an eight-game homestand Mar. 1. The wins helped the Argos claim their second straight GSC series.
* The offensive barrage helped the Argos overcome a 7-5 loss in Game 1 of the series. UWF led 4-3 in the late stages of Game 1 only to have the Warhawks roar back.
* Matt Jones was particularly impressive at the plate in the doubleheader sweep, going off for seven hits, including a grand slam, and seven RBIs. He also scored seven runs.
 
GSC LEADERS

* UWF currently leads the Gulf South Conference in team batting average (.301), doubles (32), runs (96) and total bases (212). The team is second in the conference in home runs with 12 and second in hits with 144.
* West Florida leads the conference in fielding percentage (.974) and is third with a 2.94 ERA. Only UWF and Delta State rank in the conference top three in batting average, fielding percentage and ERA.
* Matthew Estrada is second in the GSC with a .457 average. He is also second with a .558 on base percentage. He is tenth in the Gulf South with a .629 slugging percentage.
* Matthew Jones is fifth in the GSC with 15 runs scored. He is tied for seventh with 20 hits and leads the conference in hit-by-pitches with seven.
* Matt Sullivan is tied for the conference lead with seven doubles. Trevor Payne has surged into a tie for third in the GSC with 16 RBIs. He is tied for second with six doubles.
* Tony Kucera is seventh in the GSC with a 1.35 ERA. Jared Hatch is 10th with a 1.53 ERA. Kucera is 8th with an opponent batting average of .184.
* Kucera and Tony Rossi are tied for third in the GSC with two wins apiece.
 
ARGOS ADD MARCH 5TH GAME VS. WILLIAM CAREY
 
* UWF baseball has added an upcoming game to its 2019 schedule. The Argos will now play William Carey University Tuesday, Mar. 5. First pitch in the nine-inning game is slated for 5:00 p.m.
* UWF will now play nine games at Jim Spooner Field from Mar. 1-Mar. 13. The homestand is the longest of the season for the Argos.
 
SCOUTING NO. 20 MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE
 
* The Choctaws come into play 10-4 overall and 3-0 in the GSC. The team is 4-4 at home, 3-0 away and 3-0 on neutral fields this year.
* Mississippi College currently ranks in the fourth in the GSC in batting with a .283 average. The Choctaws are fourth with a 4.26 ERA and third with a .967 fielding percentage.
* Billy Cameron currently ranks eighth in the conference with a .408 batting average. Four Choctaws, including Cameron, are ranked second in the conference with three home runs.
* Ryan Lane is currently sixth in the conference with a 1.22 ERA. He leads all pitchers with an opponent batting average of .122.
* The Argos and Choctaws were slated to meet in Clinton last season for a three-game series. After the first game of the set was rained out, the Argos and Choctaws split a doubleheader. UWF is 10-2 vs. Mississippi College since 2015 and 6-0 vs. the Choctaws in Pensacola in that span.
