PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF baseball will head to Rollins College this weekend for its first road series of 2019. The Argos are coming off a tight series vs. No. 4/5 Florida Southern last weekend.
UWF opens at Rollins Friday. First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m. ET/4:00 p.m. CT. The series will continue Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET/12:00 p.m CT before wrapping Sunday at 12:00 p.m. ET/11:00 a.m. CT.
"Really just looking forward to our teams first road trip, and seeing how we respond to lessons we hope they learned from the Floorida Southern series and applying them to our keys to success against Rollins," said UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat.
UWF baseball (1-2) will remain on the road Feb. 13 at Spring Hill before returning for five games in four days vs. Christian Brothers and Nova Southeastern beginning Feb. 16.
ARGOS WIN OPENER VS. MOCS
* UWF baseball opened its 2019 season with a 9-5 comeback win over No. 4/5 Florida Southern Friday at Jim Spooner Field.
Joey Bend led the Argos attack with a 3-for-4 night that included three RBIs.
* UWF struck six times in the seventh inning to erase a three-run deficit. The season-opening win was the first for the Argos since 2015. Much of the game was played through a steady, driving rain, which caused multiple pauses in the action but never an extended delay.
* Games 2 and 3 of the series both proved to be tight affairs. The Argos dropped the second game 4-2. In Game 3, UWF fell behind 3-0 but stormed back to take a 5-3 lead that held until the seventh. There, the Mocs stole the advantage and staved off the UWF comeback effort to take the series.
SOPHOMORES STEP UP VS. FLORIDA SOUTHERN
* Sophomores
Matthew Estrada and
Josh Pahlad helped the Argos to the Game 1 win vs. Florida Southern Friday. Estrada posted an early 2-RBI single to put the Argos on top. Pahlad entered a three-run game with two on and no out in the eighth. He would go on to post two scoreless innings and earn the second save of his UWF career.
* Estrada, last year's GSC Freshman of the Year, turned in a strong performance all series vs. the Mocs. The Pensacola native went 5-for-12 with one home run, three RBIs, three runs scored and two hit-by-pitches across the three games.
* Estrada was one of four Argos, along with seniors
Robert Lopez,
Joey Bend and
Matthew Jones, who had four hits in the opening series.
SCOUTING ROLLINS
* The Tars are 2-1 so far this season. The team battled Lenoir-Rhyne to open the season and won the opening and closing games of the three-game series.
* The series vs. UWF is part of a six-game homestand to open the season for Rollins. They head to Flagler for their first road game Feb. 12.
* The Tars struggled with the bats vs. Lenoir-Rhyne, hitting just .191. The team got excellent pitching though to power the two wins. The staff held the Bears to just three runs for the series.
* Senior Cameron Enck won the Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week award after shutting Lenoir-Rhyne out in a 5-0 win to open the series. He went seven innings of one-hit, seven-strikeout ball.
* Rollins is coming off a 20-29 season a year ago. The team went 8-22 in conference play in 2018. UWF defeated the Tars in both games of a Feb. 2018 doubleheader in Pensacola.
* The Tars were ranked T-6th in a preseason poll of Sunshine State Conference coaches. The team is looking to overcome the losses of 2018 pitching stars Brad Case, who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Brian Auerbach, who signed with the Philadelphia Phillies.
* UWF is 19-6 vs. Rollins since 2006 and has won the last four head-to-head matchups.
