PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 9/10 UWF baseball travels to Montevallo Wednesday afternoon for a battle between two of the three teams in the GSC with 12 conference wins. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
UWF (21-9, 13-2 GSC) currently leads the Gulf South Conference. Montevallo (15-14, 12-6 GSC) sits in third place, 2.5 games behind the Argonauts.
No. 9/10 West Florida returns home this weekend to face Shorter. First pitch in a three-game series vs. the Hawks at Jim Spooner Field is set for 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
ARGOS RISE INTO NATIONAL TOP 10
* UWF baseball rose in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers poll released Tuesday. The Argonauts checked in at No. 9 and are now featured in the top 10 in two different national polls.
* The Argos also rose to No. 2 in the latest South Region poll released by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
* UWF baseball has risen 13 spots to No. 10 in the latest iteration of the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II national poll.
* The Argonauts are the top-ranked GSC team in the CBN poll. Tampa (23-6) topped the poll as the national number one. Colorado Mesa, North Greenville, Catawba and West Texas A&M rounded out the national top five.
SULLIVAN WINS GSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
* UWF baseball senior outfielder
Matt Sullivan has been named the Gulf South Player of the Week after helping the Argonauts to three wins last week.
* The Dr. Phillips High alum is leading the GSC with a .758 slugging percentage. He is also first in the conference with 34 runs scored. Sullivan is second in the GSC in doubles (11), third in home runs (7), fourth in RBIs (33), fourth in average (.394), and fifth in on-base percentage (.500).
* UWF has now captured a GSC Freshman of the Week, a GSC Player of the Week and/or a GSC Pitcher of the Week award for three consecutive weeks.
* Sullivan is currently riding an 18-game hitting streak, the longest streak on the team this year. Sullivan and
Trevor Payne have each reached base in 24 straight games.
ARGOS WIN CRUCIAL SERIES AT DELTA STATE
* UWF baseball took two of three in Cleveland, Miss. vs. then-No. 2/6 Delta State over the weekend.
Tony Kucera and Andrew Vacaccio picked up wins, and
Matt Sullivan finished with eight hits (six for extra-bases) to power the series win.
* The Argos scored a combined 20 runs over the three games vs. the Statesmen. UWF took 7-5 and 7-3 wins Saturday before falling 16-6 Sunday.
* The wins improved the Argos to 20-20 since 2006 vs. Delta State.
SCOUTING MONTEVALLO
* The Falcons currently stand at 15-14 overall and 12-6 in conference play. The team is 7-9 at home and 8-5 away.
* The Falcons lead the conference in home runs this year with 32 but are tied with Christian Brothers for the lowest team batting average in the GSC at .252. Tyler Krabbe paces all individual players in the GSC with 10 home runs.
* The Falcons have a .956 fielding percentage and a 5.42 team ERA, ranked 9th and 10th respectively in the GSC.
* While Wednesday's game will not count in the GSC standings, it will still be a South Region game for both clubs. The Argos and Falcons will also meet Apr. 3 at Jim Spooner Field.
* UWF baseball is 13-11 vs. Montevallo since 2006. UWF dropped two of three to the Falcons during last year's regular season but downed Montevallo 7-1 at the GSC Tournament.
