No. 9/10 UWF Baseball Storms Back To Win Series vs. Shorter

Argos host Montevallo Wednesday at Jim Spooner Field

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Matthew Estrada and Isaac Phillips combined for five RBIs as No. 9/10 UWF baseball took the rubber match in the three-game series vs. Shorter Sunday at Jim Spooner Field. UWF scored 10 unanswered runs to take erase a 4-1 deficit and win 11-4.

"The guys just kept fighting in their at-bats," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "They were making pitching changes and had a bunch of different looks with right-handers and left-handers. It wasn't a perfect day out here in terms of weather, but they found a way, and that's what you've got to do."

Tony Rossi loaded the bases three times in the first three innings as the Argo starter. The freshman righty escaped damage in each of the first two frames before ultimately allowing three runs with two outs in the third. Kirk Maddox entered the game to leave two in scoring position in that inning before allowing a run in the fourth.

Jay Simpson stabilized the pitching situation by leaving two aboard in the fourth and then carding three straight scoreless frames in the fifth through seventh. The junior relief man was excellent, striking out four on the way to improving to 2-2 on the season.

UWF struck for three runs in the fourth to even the game at 4-4. Estrada highlighted the rally with a two-out, two-strike, two-RBI double to right center to draw the Argonauts level. UWF added three more in the fifth on RBIs by Dylan Menhennett, Mike Farnell and Phillips.

Farnell would finish with one of his finest efforts in an Argo uniform. The senior started at first base and reached base four times. He carded two hits and two runs scored. His double in the fifth expanded the lead to 6-4. The Argos would go on to add three more runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Phillips, Joey Bend, and Robert Lopez joined Farnell as the four Argos with two runs in the game. Estrada drove in three while Phillips drove in two. Each team finished with ten hits. The Hawks committed five errors in the game while the Argonauts committed just one.

Jaydon Berry (1-6) suffered the loss for Shorter. He allowed six runs (three earned) in four-plus innings of relief. Berry entered the game after starter Tyler Cates faced just one batter. The Hawks (17-15, 10-10 GSC) were led offensively by Samyr Santos, who had two hits and two RBIs. Much of the game was played in a steady rain.

No. 9/10 UWF (24-10, 15-3 GSC) takes on Montevallo (15-18, 12-9 GSC) Wednesday at Jim Spooner Field. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m. The Argos defeated the Falcons 8-3 Mar. 27 at Montevallo.

"We've got to try to keep this train rolling," said Jeffcoat. "Hopefully these guys feel it and want to keep giving the best effort they can."
