Jon Brown Earns GSC Men's Basketball Freshman of the Year Award

Phenomenal first-year player becomes second UWF men's basketball to take home the honor

GSC POSTSEASON AWARDS

PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF wing player Jon Brown has been named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year after an outstanding first season for the Argonauts.

"I am honored to receive this award," said Brown, who transferred to UWF after redshirting at the University of North Alabama last season. "I feel like I couldn't have done this without the help of my teammates and the opportunity from the coaches, who put me in the position to be successful."

Brown is just the second player in UWF men's basketball history to earn the honor. He joins Anthony Russell as the only two players in program history to win the award. Russell claimed the GSC East Division Freshman of the Year honor in 1994-95. Brown is the first player in UWF men's basketball history to lay claim to the honor in a non-divisional format.

"Jon had a great first year here," said UWF head coach Jeff Burkhamer. "He was the six-time GSC Freshman of the Week, and he really deserves to be the Freshman of the Year. I thought he got better and better as the season went, and I'm glad to see the coaches in our league recognized him as being the best freshman in our conference."

The Helena, Ala. native won the GSC Freshman of the Week award six times this season, just one off the all-time Gulf South Conference record of seven. He was first among GSC freshmen in scoring (14.6 PPG and 410 total points). He led all GSC freshmen in free throws made (118) and free throw percentage (.797).

Brown also led all GSC freshmen in minutes (34.7 per game and 972 total) and tied for first in among GSC freshmen in steals. Both he and Matous Kainc of Shorter averaged 1.3 steals per game. He was third among GSC freshmen in rebounds (5.3 per game and 148 total).

The Helena High alum finished sixth overall in the conference this year with 410 total points and 14.6 PPG. His 118 made free throws rank second in the GSC overall, and his .797 mark from the line was seventh. He tied for 19th with 5.3 rebounds per game and was fifth with 34.7 minutes per game.

"I'm just happy to see that my hard work and dedication finally paid off," said Brown. "I'm just so excited for this award to be mine."
