No. 5/12 UWF Baseball Heads To UAH Friday, Saturday

PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 5/12 UWF baseball travels to Alabama Huntsville this weekend for a three-game series. The Argos and Chargers begin the series with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. Friday. The teams will conclude the set with a 1:00 p.m. game Saturday.
 
The Argos are tied for the conference lead in wins with 18. UWF takes on Spring Hill at home Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. and concludes the regular season with a three-game homestand vs. West Alabama Apr. 26-27.
 
ARGOS NOW NO. 5/12 NATIONALLY, NO. 2 IN NCBWA SOUTH REGION
 
* UWF baseball rose in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll to No. 5 nationally. The Argos are now ranked No. 12 in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers poll and No. 2 in the NCBWA South Region rankings.

* UWF rose one spot in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper DII poll. Colorado Mesa topped the poll. North Greenville, West Texas A&M, Quincy and UWF rounded out the national top five. The Argos are now ranked No. 12 in the latest NCBWA poll. UWF is the top-ranked GSC team in both the CBN and NCBWA polls. Tampa came in at No. 6 in the latest NCBWA national poll. UC San Diego topped the poll.

* The Argonauts are ranked No. 2 in the latest NCBWA South Region Poll. Tampa topped the rankings with six first-place votes. The Argos and third-place Mississippi College each received one first-place vote. Delta State and Nova Southeastern rounded out the region's top five. The first iteration of the official NCAA South Region rankings are due out Wednesday.
 
FARNELL TOPS CONFERENCE IN ON-BASE PERCENTAGE
 
* Senior catcher/designated hitter Mike Farnell currently leads the GSC in on-base percentage at .512. He is the only batter in the conference with an OBP of at least .500.
* Farnell, a transfer from Murray State, has reached base in nine straight games. He reached base in 17 straight earlier this season.
 
PAYNE ON BASE IN 35 STRAIGHT
 
* Junior catcher Trevor Payne has extended his streak of reaching base to 35 straight games. He has reached base in 37 of 38 games this season.
* Payne delivered the Argos' first walkoff hit of the 2019 season Saturday vs. GSC rival Lee. His single through the left side in the seventh helped the Argos take the series finale vs. the Flames.
 
ARGO STARTERS CONTINUE TO BE DOMINANT
 
* The current Argo starting rotation of Daniel Floyd, Andrew Vaccacio and Tony Kucera has proven to be dominant this season. Each of the three hurlers ranks in the top eight in the conference in ERA.
* Vaccacio is 10th in the conference with 58 strikeouts in nine starts and 48 innings. Kucera is second in the conference with seven wins. Floyd is the only pitcher in the league to rank in the top 10 in wins (5) and saves (4).
 
SCOUTING ALABAMA HUNTSVILLE
 
* The Chargers currently sit in fourth place in the GSC at 14-9 in conference play and 24-16 overall. The team has been one of the most effective home teams in the conference this season. They currently own a 15-4 record in Huntsville.
* Ala. Huntsville is third in the conference with a .294 team batting average, fifth with a 4.92 team ERA, and fourth with a .960 fielding percentage.
* The Chargers are led offensively by Nolan Ramsey, who tops the club and is fifth in the GSC with a .372 average. Harper Case has proven to be the team's most effective arm. He owns a 3.51 ERA, the 15th best mark in the conference.
* UWF is 21-22 vs. Alabama Huntsville since 2006. The Argos are 8-10 in Huntsville in that span.
