No. 10 UWF Baseball Hosts Montevallo Wednesday Afternoon

Argonauts and Falcons set to meet for the second time in seven days

PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 10 UWF baseball battles Montevallo at home Wednesday. First pitch at Jim Spooner Field is slated for 4:00 p.m.
 
The Argos defeated the Falcons 8-3 Mar. 27 at Montevallo. Matt Sullivan reached six times in the game. Daniel Floyd earned the win with six innings of one-run ball. The meeting will be the last of the regular season between UWF (24-10, 15-3 GSC) and UM (15-18, 12-9 GSC).
 
ARGONAUTS STORM BACK TO WIN SERIES VS. SHORTER
 
* Matthew Estrada and Isaac Phillips combined for five RBIs as No. 9/10 UWF baseball took the rubber match in the three-game series vs. Shorter Sunday at Jim Spooner Field. UWF scored 10 unanswered runs to take erase a 4-1 deficit and win 11-4.
* Jay Simpson stabilized the pitching situation by leaving two aboard in the fourth and then carding three straight scoreless frames in the fifth through seventh. The junior relief man was excellent, striking out four on the way to improving to 2-2 on the season.
* The Argos took Game 1 9-4 behind six innings of excellence by starter Tony Kucera. He allowed just one earned run. The Argos led in Game 2 of the series but surrendered the advantage in the sixth before ultimately falling to the Hawks.

UWF HOLDS STEADY IN LATEST NATIONAL AND REGIONAL POLLS
 
* UWF is now No. 10 in the latest edition of the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Div. II poll. UWF has now been ranked in each of the four in-season Collegiate Baseball polls released beginning Mar. 11.
* The Argos are now No. 10 in the latest edition of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll. The Argos are No. 2 in the latest iteration of the NCBWA South Region rankings as well. The team trails only No. 1 Tampa. UWF is the highest-ranked GSC team in all three polls.
 
PAYNE EXTENDS STREAK OF REACHING BASE TO 28 STRAIGHT GAMES

* Junior catcher Trevor Payne has reached base in each of his last 28 appearances. The streak is the longest on the Argonaut team this season.
* Four Argos have reached base in at least 16 games this season. Matt Sullivan reached base in 26 straight games, a streak snapped over the weekend vs. Shorter.
* Payne, a Rockledge High alum, has been a key part of the Argo program for three years. He is hitting .302 with a .397 on-base percentage.
* Dylan Menhennett has now reached base in 12 straight games. Estrada has reached in 11 straight.
 
SCOUTING MONTEVALLO
 
* The Falcons come into the Wednesday matchup at 15-18 overall and 12-9 in conference play. The team is 6-9 at home and 9-9 away this year. The Falcons are 0-5 in the last five games. The team fell 8-3 vs. UWF last week before being swept in a weekend series vs. Miss. College.
* The Falcons lead the conference in home runs this year with 35 but have the lowest team batting average in the conference at .246. Tyler Krabbe paces all individual players in the GSC with 11 home runs.
* The Falcons have a 5.56 team ERA and a .952 team fielding percentage, ranked 9th and 10th respectively in the GSC.
* While Wednesday's game will not count in the GSC standings, it will still be a South Region game for both clubs.
* UWF baseball is 14-11 vs. Montevallo since 2006. UWF dropped two of three to the Falcons during last year's regular season but downed Montevallo 7-1 at the GSC Tournament. The Argos are looking to complete the regular season sweep vs. the Falcons Wednesday.
