OXFORD, Ala. – No. 3 UWF Baseball fell in the Gulf South Tournament championship game 6-0 to Delta State Tuesday at Choccolocco Park.
Isaac Phillips,
Matthew Estrada and
Andrew Vaccacio were selected to the All-Gulf South Tournament team.
"Just proud of this team and the effort that they've given," said UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "Hopefully we can learn from this adversity… It just wasn't our day. It wasn't meant to be."
Vaccacio took a no-hitter into the sixth inning vs. the Statesmen, who defeated the Argos 9-1 Monday and survived a 7-6 thriller vs. Valdosta State earlier in the day. He allowed a total of one hit and two walks in a no-decision.
Vaccacio found himself in a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth.
Tony Kucera (8-2) entered in relief and induced a fielder's choice at the plate and a flyout to center to escape the trouble without a run. The Statesmen loaded the bases in the seventh with no one out. Kucera limited the damage to just a run on a sacrifice fly.
In the eighth though, the Statesmen blew the contest open. They combined for five runs vs. Kucera and
Kirk Maddox to turn a 1-0 advantage into a 6-0 advantage and put the game out of reach.
The UWF bats boarded a total of six over the first four innings vs. Delta starter Hunter Riggins (10-3) before sending the minimum to the plate in the fifth through the ninth.
Trevor Payne had one of just two hits in the game for the Argo offense. He extended his streak of reaching base safely to 46 straight games.
The Argos are expected to receive a South Regional bid. The NCAA Selection Show is slated for 9 p.m. CT Sunday. The top two teams in the region will earn hosting rights. South Regional games will begin May 16.
