PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF baseball will host No. 23 Delta State and Nova Southeastern at Jim Spooner Field Saturday through Tuesday. The Argos will play a three-game set against the Statesmen on Saturday and Sunday and remain in action Monday and Tuesday for a two-game series vs. the Sharks.

"We're looking forward to being back home after a couple of back to back road series and seeing the energy at Jim Spooner Field against Delta State, who has always been a big rival for us," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat.

The doubleheader vs. Delta State will begin Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The series finale will begin Sunday at 1:00 p.m. First pitch Monday vs. Nova Southeastern is slated for 6:00 p.m. The set will close Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.

ARGOS ARE COMING OFF SECOND CONSECUTIVE GSC SERIES WIN
The Argos fell in game one of the series to West Alabama in a close one by a final score of 3-2. Both teams were held scoreless until the sixth inning, when UWA struck for three runs – only one of which was earned. Eric Keating put together a strong start, striking out seven and allowed four hits over 5.1 innings.

Matthew Estrada was the hero in game two of the doubleheader going 4-4 with a triple and 3 RBIs, helping lead the Argos to a 6-3 victory. This was Estrada's third career four-hit game.

UWF used two big innings and an outstanding performance from starting pitcher Daniel Floyd to cruise to a series finale win over West Alabama 15-0 on Sunday afternoon.

MITCHELL EARNS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK HONORS
Outfielder Brooks Mitchell earned the first Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week award of his UWF career Tuesday.

Mitchell started all three games for the Argos this past weekend against West Alabama, finishing 4-7 (.571) with a double, two RBIs, three runs scored, two walks, and a stolen base.

JEFFCOAT CHASING 500 WINS AT UWF
UWF head baseball coach Mike Jeffcoat is five wins away from 500 career wins at UWF. He owns a career record of 495-273 for a .645 career winning percentage going into this weekend series.

Jeffcoat has recently led the Argonauts to 2016 and 2019 GSC Regular Season Championships, a 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship, and six NCAA South Regional tournaments in the last nine years

The Argonauts have made an appearance in the GSC Tournament for ten consecutive seasons and have posted 30-win seasons in nine of the last ten years with Jeffcoat at the helm.

SCOUTING DELTA STATE
The Statesmen began conference play losing 2-3 at Alabama-Huntsville and then rebounded last weekend sweeping Christian Brothers to improve to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in the GSC. Delta State outscored Christian Brothers 29-2 in the series.

The Argos have lost six out of their last eight games against the Statesmen, including the last three matchups. West Florida is 20-22 all-time versus Delta State and 13-12 against them at home.

Delta State's offense is currently batting .332 on the season and have scored 104 total runs thus far. The team's pitching has been excellent in 2020 as they have limited opponents to a batting average of .202 this year. DSU has only allowed 57 runs with 45 of those being earned.

SCOUTING NOVA SOUTHEASTERN
The Sharks are 6-8 overall this year and 2-1 in Sunshine State Conference play. The team most recently won two out of three games vs. No. 15 Barry University.

Nova played a strong out of conference schedule to begin the season hosting No. 7 North Greenville, No. 2 Colorado Mesa and No. 15 Newberry in early February. The Sharks finished 2-5 against those three ranked opponents.

Nova has three batters hitting at least .340 this season. The team currently leads the Sunshine Conference in both stolen bases (42) and strikeouts (130).

The Nova pitching staff has a collective 4.97 ERA, which ranks third to last in their conference. Nathan Campbell leads his team with 13.1 innings pitched. He has an ERA of 4.73.

UWF is 2-3 against Nova all-time and 1-1 when playing them at Jim Spooner Field.
