PENSACOLA, Fla.
- Following a split in a two-game home series with Auburn Montgomery, the UWF Men's Basketball will travel to Valdosta, Georgia to take on the ninth-ranked Valdosta State on Tuesday night at the Complex.  Tip-off is set for 7 pm ET.

The Argos stand at 2-1 on the year, with all of their games being played at home as they hosted Lee on December 12th in addition to last week's games against Auburn Montgomery.

Last time out: UWF was scorching from the field in their win over the Warhawks on Saturday, shooting 27-53 overall, including a 10-20 mark from downtown.  Guard Daniel Sofield and forward Conor Flanagan hit nine-three pointers combined to set the pace.  The sophomores combined for 33 points, eight rebounds, six assists, four steals and a +- of 12 during the contest.

Saturday night also was the debut of forward Wendell Matthews, who came off the bench to score eight points on 4-4 shooting from the field.  The native of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota also grabbed a team-high five rebounds and snagged two steals in 17 minutes. Matthews, along with junior Akili Vining who tallied nine points and three assists, were part of an Argonaut bench that outscored AUM, 22-6.

Dan The Three-Point Man: Sofield, a sophomore from Jackson, New Jersey, has been a marksman from downtown this season.  He is currently leading the team in three-point field goals (11) and percentage (.550).  His 6-7 (.857) performance on Saturday tied him for second in program history in three-point percentage in a game, putting him only behind Sean Flynn, who went 8-9 against Valdosta State on February 24th, 1996.  Daniel ranks third in the GSC in three-point field goal percentage, third in three-pointers per game (3.7).  His 3.7 three-pointers per contest is good enough for 15th nationally.  Sofield is tops on the team, averaging 17 points per game.

Tarik The Freak: Tarik Mckelphin, a senior from Plant City, Florida, has been everywhere on the court this season for UWF.  The 6'4 guard leads the team in minutes (35), rebounds (9.3), blocks (2.3) and assists per contest (4.3).  He also paces the Argos in field goals made (16) on the season.  Mckelphin is also second on the team in scoring with 14.7 points per game. He currently ranks second in the GSC in rebounding, seventh in assists, second in blocks, and ninth in minutes.

Argonaut Bench Mob: The Argos have used a balanced attack to come in waves against opponents this season.  Three UWF players have averaged at least five points off the bench in Michael Maumbe (5), Vining (7.7) and Matthews (8).  West Florida outscored AUM by a combined 51-17 in scoring off the bench in their two games last week.  In game one, Maumbe and Vining combined for 19 with Vining totaling 12 points, two assists and two boards in 20 minutes of action.  In the second game, it was Matthews and Vining doing the heavy lifting, totaling 17 points between them.  Tate Mulkey and Kendall Bynum also provided the second unit with a spark, totaling five points, five assists, two boards and a steal between them.  Altogether, the four players had a combined +- of +22 during the contest.

Scouting VSU: The Blazers come into the game undefeated at 5-0, fresh off a weekend sweep of Shorter with both games being decided by 14 points or more, which equals their season margin of victory this season of 14.4.  Valdosta State is led by Pre-Season GSC All-East Division guard, Imoras Agee. Through five games, Agee is averaging 21.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in almost 33 minutes per night.  The 6'4 guard is also shooting 51 percent from the field and 51 percent from the three-point line.  Agee, along with Cam Hamilton and Burke Putnam, have started all 5 games this year. A Linden, Alabama product, Imoras is third in the GSC in scoring, and second in field goals made with 39.  The three guards have been the spark to VSU's top scoring offense in the Gulf South Conference this season, as they average 87 points per game.

Putnam and Hamilton have been steady second and third options, scoring 12.8 and 15.4 points and snagging 5.4 and 4.6 rebounds, respectively.  VSU has also dominated their opponents on the glass, averaging 44.4 rebounds per game, almost 11 more than their opponents.  Forward Jakari Gallon leads the Blazers with 7.4 rebounds per contest, good enough to place him ninth in the conference.

Series History: Overall, UWF is 9-25 against the Blazers all-time, including a 3-16 mark on the road.  The Argos last beat VSU on February 22nd, 2018 behind 24 points from DJ Thorpe and 18 from guard Rashaan Benson.  Last season, the Argos dropped both match-ups to VSU, including a home contest where guards Mckelphin and Cameron Cox combined for 41 points and 13 rebounds.
